Pelosi should be ashamed of herself for not attending the service. So should President Bush.

You know in my house we were taught to attend funerals out of respect for those who we have known. That has always stuck with me.
Last summer our staff at our K-12 district lost a student to a car accident. (She was going to be a junior in high school.) I was very surprised at how few teachers from my district were there.

The President doesn't attend the Capital Rotunda Services
It's a service for members of Congress
The President attends the National Services, which will be held on Tuesday

So should President Bush.My friend called me last night and told me he wasn't there and at first I didn't believe her (very liberal, thought she was trying to get me going). Turns out, not so much.

I agree wholeheartedly. Sensenbrenner got it right. He said, "When you're in an official position, it's one of the things that's the right thing to do."

So should President Bush.President Bush will be attending later services in these several-days-long funerary rites.
I totally agree that we, and in particular our nation's leaders, should respect the office of the presidency. I also agree that Gerald Ford was a gentlemanly and honorable man. But he was an accidental president, never elected by the American people, who served less than three years. He has been out of office for 30 years and didn't do much of note during those 30 years. So I think a more scaled-back, subdued send off is warranted in his case.

On an earlier thread, I carefully mentioned that I wished that President Bush had attended this event. I was informed that he would attend a major event of the end of the ceremonies. I had not realized this (FreeRepbulic is where I get a major part of my information, and I had not seen this information before.); and I was happy to learn that our President would take part in the remembrances of our previous president, Gerald Ford.
