Catholic Family Group Calls Family-Size-Limit Proposal ‘Almost Laughable’ (To Conserve Resources)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (NZ Catholic) – A director of a Catholic family group has called a proposal to limit families to two children "almost laughable."

The suggestion, from Sustainable Wellington Net, was one of several from “green” groups that want to ensure natural resources are used responsibly.

Lynn Hill, co-director of the Passionist Family Group Movement in the North Island, said it would be sad for parents to lose the right to decide how many children they have.

"Mothers and fathers of large families, or those who have grown up in large families, know it is a very rich way of life," Hill told NZ Catholic.

She said New Zealand is not short of resources and suggested large families recognize the need to protect the earth.

"Families are not the ones raping the environment; that's much more likely to be done by businesses," Hill said.

Mike Ennis of Sustainable Wellington Net told The Press that the suggestion was serious and said family size "makes a dramatic difference in Western countries with the differential use of resources per capita".

"It's about the ecological footprint of a family," Ennis told the Christchurch newspaper.

Would you make a law penalizing people who have more than a certain number of kids? If not, than what? We in western nations (like New Zealand) are not overpopulated. In many areas, especially western Europe, the population is actually going down, with birthrates as low as 1.1 in some places. Who's going to replace all those aging westerners? Well, the birthrates remain sky high in third world regions like sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, from which immigrants are now flowing into dying, depopulating Europe. All this 70s-era fear about overpopulation does is keep certain folks, who actually pay attention it, from having more kids, only to be outbred by other groups with more "vitality". Thus, in 100 years western Europe will very likely be Muslim. It's not all bad news though. Here in America who do you think has more kids, conservatives or liberals? It's the liberals who fear overpopulation and the liberals who are to busy "discovering themselves" to raise families. Thus, their hope for a legacy is rather shaky compared to religious and social conservatives with big suburban broods. Demographics is key to who wins the ideological war in the end and those who fear overpopulation have already put themselves at a major disadvantage.
