Defiant to the end, Saddam Hussein mocked Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr moments before he was hanged, a witness said Saturday.
The Iraqi government executed Hussein before dawn as punishment for his role in a massacre of his own people, more than two decades before he was toppled by a U.S.-led invasion.
A video of the execution broadcast on Al-Iraqiya state television showed Hussein, dressed in a black overcoat, being led into a room by three masked guards. (Watch noose placed around Hussein's neck -- graphic content, viewer discretion advised )
A witness, Iraqi Judge Munir Haddad, said that one of the executioners told Hussein that the former dictator had destroyed Iraq, which sparked an argument that was joined by several government officials in the room.
As a noose was tightened around Hussein's neck, one of the executioners yelled "long live Muqtada al-Sadr," Haddad said, referring to the powerful anti-American Shiite religious leader.
Hussein, a Sunni, uttered one last phrase before he died, saying "Muqtada al-Sadr" in a mocking tone, according to Haddad's account.

He's still dead.
bump for later
al-Sadr may follow Saddam to all those high-bosomed virgins in Allah's afterlife whorehouse at some point in the near future; who knows?
(This video shows him after the arguments, presumably).
Well, it's possible the Iraqis hanged the right guy in the wrong order. ;)
al-Sadr is going to be next. We are still looking for some steel cable that will hold his weight. al-Sadr should have been shot as soon as we took over Baghdad. He's a pig.
It was a green M&M's rant wasn't it?
Saddam still should've been shot the day they found him.
Don't know what to make of this. One unconfirmed source (Mr. Hadddad) doesn't convince me. It would make sense for pro-Sadrist circles/Sadrists to spread this as an urban myth, to leave an impression along the lines that somehow Sadr was executing Saddam, or that justice was deliverd by Sadr.
Anyway Saddam is dead now. Time to hang Sadr.
Interesting; and perhaps a 'right move' to let him wear the coat as opposed to his wearing prison garb only. . .that and the fact that they allowed his refusal to wear mask. . .seems at least a bone of consideration to this grotesque tyrant's supporters. . .
Too bad CNN didn't issue this WARNING when they showed film of AMERICAN SOLDIERS being MURDERED!!!
SPIT!!!
"long live Muqtada al-Sadr,"
too funny......2007 is going to be al-Sadrs exit point.
We still have a day left for 2006... the earlier, the better, right? Sigh, at least one of us should be right...
He's morally, ethically, spiritually, physically, positively, absolutely, undeniably and reliably dead. Not only merely dead, he's really most sincerely dead.
OK... I'm no expert on real hangin's, but I've seen
enough fake movie hangin's to wonder ... what was the
possible purpose of all that material around Saddam's
neck that "padded" the noose?
(Flame Suit On)
It's bad enough getting hung without getting rope burn too. They couldn't find any Gold Bond Powder.
Does anyone have a credible source for this? I think that it is unlikely that they even offered him a mask. The Iraqi government would not want any doubt about who was hanged...though I would agree that when the U.S. turned him over to the Shia government there really wasn't a lot of doubt he would end up dead soon.
