I used to be in one...and I used to have to deal with the same union. Members don't cross the leadership, because there's a lot of discretion regarding what level of help you get from the union if you happen to be in trouble.

There are a little over 500,000 members in the NYC teachers union -- most of them women, many of them older women. It is a union made up of half a million menopausal women. I'm pretty sure the steel workers don't have this problem.
