Unless they dove while people were up top, I doubt it. Man Overboard should not kill careers.

Strange, how do four sailors all suddenly fall overboard unless something pushed or forced them overboard?

Submarine hulls are tubular. It is very easy to slip off into the water. Happens all the time.

I am guessing but if they fell overboard while underway they got caught in the ship screws.

Clearly, they were screwed.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that they were wearing safety lines that kept them from being caught in the screws or washed away. However, if the water was rough, they were undoubtedly battered against the hull.

RIP

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/12/29/uk.us.sailors.reut/index.html

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Two U.S. sailors were killed after falling overboard from a nuclear-powered submarine as it left the southern English port of Plymouth on Friday, the U.S. Navy said.

Two other sailors who fell overboard from the USS Minneapolis-St. Paul suffered minor injuries but were later released from hospital, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 6th fleet in Italy said.

The Navy said the cause of the accident was under investigation.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul had spent a week in port at Plymouth and was leaving the Devonport naval base when the accident happened.

Sixth fleet spokesman Lieutenant Chris Servello said the four sailors were rescued by fellow crew members and British authorities after falling overboard and were taken to a local hospital, where two of them were pronounced dead.

The Navy was not releasing the names of the dead sailors pending notification of next of kin, he said.

The submarine remained at sea after the accident, he said.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul has its home port at Norfolk, Virginia.

The way our navy works, he's got a nice desk to look forward to, even if he did nothing wrong.
His boat. His watch. He's done.

"Man Overboard should not kill careers."

Don't know about the submarine community, but in the Surface Line community there would be a feeding frenzy.

I'm surprised the Surface Line community didn't relieve hundreds of officers for cause over the big tsunami a couple of years ago.

I still don't get it. Simply falling overboard shouldn't kill someone, unless they can't swim.
