What I'm wondering is if the news media would have been into as much dis-information and mistaken reporting as they are today.

What we have today is pathetic.

Hard to say. Reporting happened well after the fact back then, and everything was censored before release. So this minute by minute reporting, often wrong, did not happen back then.
