ATLANTA Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Committee Chairman John Douglas (R-Covington) has persuaded both the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology to allow military personnel those stationed overseas and those serving within the United States to listen to any athletic event for free.
Earlier this year, while Sen. Douglas was visiting with Georgia National Guard members patrolling the U.S. Mexico border in New Mexico, a soldier told the Senator that both universities charged annual fees of $90 (for UGA) and $50 (for Tech) to access the streaming audio during football games and other sporting events via the internet.
Upon his return, Sen. Douglas contacted both university presidents and asked that they waive the fees for those serving in the military both foreign and domestic. The presidents readily agreed and soldiers no longer will be charged.
I was delighted to receive such a positive response from both Tech and UGA, Sen. Douglas said. Each institution is a model of higher education both in our state and throughout the nation and they work hard to carry out their responsibilities to all segments of our society.
Allowing our military, whether they are stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, on the Mexican border or anywhere else in the world, to listen to their broadcasts for free will bring a touch of home to our troops and provide a great morale boost.
For those military personnel wishing to listen to Bulldog games, the internet site is www.georgiadogs.com. Click on the multi-media tab and follow the instructions for military listeners. Anyone with a U.S. military e-mail that ends in .mil will be able, after an application process, to listen to the UGA sporting events.
Georgia Tech is offering their games via their flagship radio station at www.790thezone.com. There is no charge to listen to it on the radios Web site.
On behalf of the soldiers serving this nation, I appreciate the efforts of all of those who worked to make this happen, Sen. Douglas added, especially Michael Adams at the University of Georgia and Wayne Clough at Tech.
I concur. I would imagine that it's the little things like this that soldiers appreciate the most. From a UGA point of view with all due respect to my Tech fan Freepers, nothing would connect me to home better if I were serving overseas than hearing Larry Munson screaming "TOUCHDOWN! TOUCHDOWN! TOUCHDOWN!"
I was just thinking how sweet it will be listening to Larry Munson this Saturday night. My brother was the most Dawged out soldier in Afghanistan. It's great they will be able to listen to the games, even Tech (that was really hard for me to type). Even when we watch the games on TV, we turn down the volume and put Larry on. There is a delay but it's just not a Dawgs game without Larry calling it. BTW, my Bulldog's name is Munson, after Larry of course. Oh and GOOOOOOOO DAWGS, SIC EM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are right, imagine hearing Larry Munson bouncing off the walls in Baghdad, Falujah, Tikrit, Kabul and other hell holes around the world. Welcome home Georgia troops!
