To: Sub-Driver

Are they asking (like the headline implies) or demanding, like the sentence below illustrates?

"Spanish Muslims have written to the Vatican to demand the right to worship at Cordoba Cathedral."

A very long time ago I learned the first rule of translating Spanish or Arabic into English ~ IGNORE the name-calling, inappropriate use of harsh language, and the expressions that sound like they are being purposefully officious or obnoxious.

Doesn't mean they aren't being that way, but you'll never figure out what they are talking about if you get hung up on the attitude stuff.

Here I don't know if this simply a couple of bad back to back translations or the correct use of what English speaking people mean by demand.
