Defense Minister Amir Peretz on Tuesday evening briefed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on the Qassam attack in Sderot, saying that "we can no longer hold back against the Qassam fire."
Pursuant to Tuesday's attack, which left two boys moderately to severely injured, the prime minister will have an urgent defense consultation meeting even before his anticipated meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abdel Gheit.
Olmert will hear what defense sources have to say, but seems focused on maintaining continued restraint.
In the meantime, Peretz made it clear to the prime minister that he opposes a continuing policy of restraint. Following the Qassam attack, he told Olmert "we must act against the rocket fire, we mustn't let Jihad run rampant."
Peretz intends to hold a number of meetings with defense officials in preparation for his defense consultation meeting with Olmert.
In addition to Peretz, IDF Chief of General Staff Dan Halutz , Shin Bet officials and additional members of the defense establishment are anticipated to take part in the meeting.
In the latest government meeting, Sunday night, Shin Bet Chief Yuval Diskin gave a briefing about the new security situation created in Gaza and the ongoing rocket fire.
Diskin stated at that time that rocket fire had decreased by 75 percent since the cease fire: only 50 Qassams post-ceasefire as opposed to 240 Qassams in the same time prior to the ceasefire.
However, in a sharp increase, ten rockets were fired at Israel since Monday.

Only 50 eh, well that's a relief.

Olmert and Peretz should be catapulted across the Jordan.
They are the worst politicians in the worst time.
"Can't hold back" is no excuse. They should use their power to destroy the sites/villages/towns were the rockets are launched.
Period.
I totally agree. Action to protect their citizens is long overdue and something they are obligated to do.
Reminds me of the carter administration.Way in over their heads.
Time for the return of Netanyahu.
Has anyone observed any attempt by the PA authorities to stop the rockt attacks?
I didn't think so.
Every rocket that clears the fence should be answered by moving the fence.
No country should be expected to live with an open wound on its flank. A rocket attack is an act of war, and it has to be answered. Killing the attackers is necessary but insufficient; a price in land must be exacted for every attack. It is the only way to communicate with them that will actually register.
I would suggest they simply state, very clearly and very calmly. ANY rocket attack will result in the following; 24 hour notice that 2 kilometers around the launch site will be leveled. Then flatten it. Rinse, repeat. The attacks will stop.

Do you think it is as easy as that? Israel could smash these Islamic terrorists in a nanosecond, but they know full well that if they do they will incur the full wrath of the international community. Unfortunately, even the U.S. will join in calls for "restraint" and privately pressure Israel to cease fire and pull back. Israel will comply because it cannot afford to alienate its one remaining major power ally on the world stage.
The world cares nothing that Israel is continually being attacked by these missiles - a situation that NONE of the countries turning a deaf ear to Israel's plight would tolerate if it were their border. But you can be sure that they WILL take immediate notice if and when Israel retaliates.
Look what happened in Lebanon a few months ago. Israel was forced to abort their military offensive in the face of overwhelming international pressure, despite the fact that the offensive was made necessary by terrorist missiles being fired across the border.
I had the opportunity of living in the Holy Land, and saw Saddam's scud missiles attacking Israel.

No, I don't think it's easy. Israel loses no matter what. Israel gets condemned by the anti-semetic, anti American UN pretty much every year.
If they didn't ignore the UN, they'd simply have to cease to exists since the UN sides with the palis in pushing the jews into the sea.
They need to have cameras 24/7 pointed at these areas...those rockets arrive...they give notice and completely FLATTEN the area. To hell with the kill the jew lobby in the international community.
Israel needs to take a page from Ethiopia's war manual.
Have any of the kidnapped soldiers been returned?
Have we even heard a word about them lately?
Not that I know of. The last I heard (fairly recently), Olmert decided that the peace process shouldn't be held hostage to the fate of two soldiers.
In return for a cease-fire in Lebanon, the arabs had promised that they would see what they could do to facilitate a possible conversation about a possible exchange of prisoners down the road, and that was the end of it. It never happened.
Hopefully someone else has more up to date information.
A very valid policy.
Who would argue against this? Or, more revealing, how would they argue against this?
