A 2005 intern in U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's Capitol Hill office had ties to Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a developer and political fundraiser now under indictment, according to a published report.
The 20-year-old student, who was paid an $804 stipend for the competitive five-week internship, was recommended by Rezko, now a main figure in a kickback scheme involving investment firms seeking state business, the Chicago Tribune reported in its Sunday editions. The intern is the son of Glenview businessman Joseph Aramanda, who once served as a chief operating officer of a Rezko company and had a long-term business relationship with Rezko, according to court records and business filings.
A telephone call made to a listing for Joseph Aramanda went unanswered Saturday.
Aramanda donated $10,000 to Obama in 2004 a year before his son took the internship. Aramanda has not been charged with any crimes.
But the internship, one of 98 Illinois spots from an application pool of 350, raises questions for Obama who has denied that he ever did favors for Rezko.
Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said the internship does not contradict Obama's statements about not doing any favors for Rezko because the five-week position couldn't benefit the fundraiser.
Rezko has pleaded not guilty to charges that he participated in the kickback schemes.
A call placed Saturday by The Associated Press to Rezko's business reached a recorded message saying the voice mailbox was full.
Rezko became acquainted with Obama in 1990 and has been a key fundraiser for the rising political star.
Last month, a Chicago Tribune report said Rezko's wife purchased a lot last year next door to Obama's new house. Obama then paid Rezko, $104,500 to expand Obama's yard into part of the lot. Obama has said the arrangements were ethical and proper.
But he also acknowledged that he "misgauged" the implications suggested by his purchase of the additional land.
