A Russian Tzarist official once came to the saintly Rabbi Itzele of Volozhin and teasingly said, "You Jews say in your prayers 'All the nations will praise G-d for His kindliness done to us [Jews]'."
"Why," he then asked, "Should the nations praise G-d for the kindnesses that G-d does to the Jews?"
"Because," Rabbi Itzele responded, "You non-Jews know better than any Jew how many of you hate Jews in your own hearts, how many of you would deny to the Jews what is rightfully theirs. You in the government know how many plans for conversion, persecution and murder you have dreamt of that were so unsuccessful that no Jew ever heard of them. And you see better than any Jew how wonderously Jews thrive with the help of G-d despite your intentions."
