Holocaust denier David Irving on Friday said Jews should ask themselves why they have been hated throughout history.
"They [Jews] should ask themselves the question, 'Why have they been so hated for 3000 years that there has been pogrom after pogrom in country after country?', said Irving, speaking at a press conference he convened in England on Friday, a day after he was released from an Austrian prison.
Irving, who was sentenced to three years in prison for denying the Holocaust, was released last week after his appeal was granted.
Asked if he sees himself as anti-Semitic, Irving said, "No, I like to think I am not."
But immediately following his answer, Irving expressed his support for Mel Gibson's comments that "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."
Irving also took pride in the success of his books and claimed that he the fortune he made from sales of his biography on World War II German General Erwin Rommel enabled him to walk into a car showroom with a paper bag stuffed with cash to buy a "Nigger brown Rolls-Royce."
Irving's comments aroused great anger within Britain's Jewish community.
Lord Janner, president of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said Irving's release was "unwarranted" and that Irving's "latest comments were totally to be expected and should be totally ignored."

Look at this very article. If he weren't in jail, would Irving have such a lofty perch from which to preach? I suppose Canadians and Europeans are more authoritarian than Americans and are more likely to see imprisonment as a natural discreditation of ideas, but if one agrees with the idea, then imprisonment tends to reinforce the validity idea. See Nelson Mandela.
Irving is just mad that he couldn't get a furlough to go to Tehran.
The dilemma here is that you are capitalizing "Catholic". In fact, "catholic" merely means "united". The whole church worldwide is "catholic". The "Catholic" church is just a particular sect based in Rome. ;)
I look at the neo nazi types in europe as an example of why attempts to silence idiots doesn't work. Sure we have neo nazis in this country but they seldom become violent. In europe, the illegal groups still exist and when we hear about them it's usually due to a violent act that gets the news.
Regarding the tag "the Chosen People", people might not be so jealous if they understood that it means chosen to receive and obey God's commandments. There's at least 613 such commandments, or "mitzvas", as my rabbi explained to me, including Sabbath observance, dietary restrictions, and so on.
As some other posters have stated, the hatred in itself may not be so unique. The fact that the Jewish people has survived may be more unique.
Regarding the cause of that hatred, part of it could be because we do not fulfill our religious responsibilities sufficiently well (including yours truly, no argument there). The hatred may be a sort of divine retribution for that.
Persecution serves to keep a Jew's identity as a Jew alive for him, strengthens his identity with the group. It may be a spiritual/social alarm system to keep him from forgetting who he is.
Hatred can be motivated by fear. Jewish customs are different in many ways from those of non-Jews. This provides fertile ground for schoolyard imaginations to run wild and breathe new life into age-old lies that are retained even into adulthood.
Jews are identified with the Torah (which Christians know as the "old testament"). The Torah contains a lot of very definite statements about what is right and what is wrong. Jews and Christians differ in their understanding of those statements, but it is clear that the Torah does not support the idea of moral relativism, "if it feels good, do it", and so on. The idea that there are absolute moral guidelines disturbs and even angers many people who do not believe in an absolute morality. I think this unconsciously motivate many individual's hatred of Jews and of Israel.
Agree totally. Your history matches that which I have found.
How does his being thrown in jail in Austria support his case? It's illegal to deny the holocaust in former Nazi nations. That's their law. If big mouths like David Irving want to commit acts of civil disobedience, let them pay the price. We ought to have the same laws in place in this country. You want to slander our Commander in Chief durng wartime, aid and abet the enemy, go right ahead. But pay the price. Let them have the courage of their convictions. Then let's see how brave these fatsos like Cindy Sheehan, Micheal Moore and the rest of the over-indulged left really are. Bring back the Sedition and Espionage Acts. Let them drink the hemlock. It was good enough for Socrates.
I guess he doesn't hate only Jews. Blacks too. He's a racist slime.
FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel/Russian Jewry ping list.
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
"The fact that they ARE the chosen people is the more significant reason, as has been expounded upon by other posters."
The main Jew Haters are members of groups that claim Choseness for themselves.
Nazism was an occult religion with a belief that the Nordic peoples were going to redeem humanity and fullful mankind's glorious spiritual destiny.
Marxists follow an ideology that denies God so the obvious "choseness" of the Jews threatens their world view.
The Moslem Arabs believe that they are God's chosen people with the inside track to God.
And of couse there are Christian's who don't get the message found in Romans 11 and 12 make the grave mistake of exalting themselves over the Jews. They do so at their peril.
God said to the Jews: "I will Bless them that bless you, and cures those who curse you"
Mel was right though. The jews ARE responsible for a lot wars and many other things both good and bad. That's because they are larger that life and most of the rest of humanity accomplish nothing. Most Gentiles are like the bit blayers or props in the unfolding drama of history. The Jews are the stars.
That's nice, but I would be happier if Irving, David Duke, and those verminous self-despising rabbis" were in a grave instead of breathing oxygen.
Every civilization that has risen up against the Jews was pagan...
The National Socialists were pagans... So were the Soviet Socialists...
Well, Sowell would approach it from an economists' view, wouldn't he?
He might be right, but the lack of assimilation is far too important. A perfect example of this (and supporting Sowell's thesis) is medieval Spain. When the Spanish expelled the Moors, they viewed the Jews (who played the middleman role, often) as collaborators. Jews form an independent culture and when there are nationalistic movements, they are the most obvious outsiders, until recently because they had noplace else to go.
Consider the term Anglo-Saxon. There are no Angles and no Saxons anymore.
I like Sowell a lot and do not doubt his description of the historic role of the middleman as applied to the Jews. Problem is, the arabs were also middlemen for centuries, managing trade routes across the deserts, up and down the coast of the Hijaz, and the Mediterranean. But suspicion or resentment of the middleman does not reach the historic dimension of attempted genocide.
One ancient accusation against the Jews is that they treated each other by mosiac law differently than they treat gentiles. Much like the way arabs are supposed to favor each other vs the way they treat non-arabs, carried over into Islam when it gained ascendancy. I don't know how much truth there is, or ever was, to this.
Israle better take out Irans nuke program or it will perish.

It appears that it won't be necessary. Good news came today. The U.N. security council unanimously voted for sanctions on Iran. Whew, thank god, now we'll all be at peace. /sarc off

Jews are chosen to keep G-d's commandments. Not just the Big Ten but all 613 commandments given in the Torah. We were chosen because we said at Mt. Sinai "We will do and we will listen." (Or something like that; sorry, I am no Bible scholar) We agreed to follow G-d first and then to hear what the rules would be. We are supposed to be a light unto the G-dless nations. This does not include Christians who are also following the same, One and Only Creator. We are not chosen because we are in any way better, only that we agreed to take on the yoke of serving G-d. This is how I understand it and how I raise my Jewish sons.
"Why indeed?"
Jew hatred says much more about the idiotic haters than it does the hated. Jews are innocent and no, I'm not a Jew
They really ought to split the postgrad numbers by "wussy degree vs. real grad degree".
