According to the AP, the man also set fire to a Christmas tree, an American flag and a revolutionary flag replica.

What an ass.

An earlier story said he did it because school breaks would be renamed Christmas Break and Easter Break....so, he turned himself into a "Fule Log".

Whata maroon.

Merry Christmas

using flammable liquid, a Christmas tree and an American Flag.

Oh, sure, when the context is bad, it's a Christmas tree, not a "holiday" tree.

Why bother extinguishing him? If he wants to burn, let him - just make sure he does not cause, say, a forest fire, or burns next to a propane tank or something similar. Maybe the fire department training grounds should be opened to such self-immolators on Thursday afternoons.

No, no. The article calls him a victim, not an ass. I'm wondering why they didn't call him the perp, too. He seems to have filled both roles simultaneously.

Where was the courage of his convictions? At least the monk in Vietnam had the courage to see it through.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that this dude was mentally ill.

Come on now, I've been to Bakersfield and if I had to live there I'd go over the edge too.
Maybe not set myself on fire like Richard Pryor but hey who knows?

The dude had mental issues (well, besides being an obvious democrat and someone who is angry at God) - I don't condone his actions- but he obviously needs help mentally- barring help though- he could always run for office and join Nancy's 'most ethical congress ever' http://sacredscoop.com

Well, grass, brush, or rubbish fire would do in the absence of trees. The idea remains the same: minimize the collateral damage and then let him burn to his heart content.

More liberal Californians should participate. Instead of celebrating Christmas, they could celebrate burnza or burnaman.

In route to the hospital, the victim allegedly cited destructive effects of religion as the reason for his protest.

Yeah, that's it... right...
