The blizzard that brought travel along the Front Range to a standstill this week also apparently led to the capture of two slaying suspects fleeing the Denver area, authorities said.
Police had been tracking the suspects, 23-year-old John Doubleday and 22-year-old Amie Lewis, for several days after the fatal shooting Dec. 10 of Jutte Burton, a 7-Eleven store clerk in Aurora.
By Wednesday, when the blizzard hit, investigators knew the pair had made it to the southern edge of the Denver metro area, said Aurora police spokesman Detective Robert Friel. They stayed Tuesday night at a motel in Castle Rock, Friel said.
We were on their trail, he said. We were a step behind for a portion of the investigation. Every time we found out where they were at, they had just left.
Interstate 25 had reopened Thursday when authorities learned Doubleday and Lewis might be somewhere around the 3000 block of East Platte Avenue. U.S. marshals and El Paso County sheriffs deputies showed photographs of the suspects to people in the area. Someone recognized them and pointed officers to a room at the Capri Motel, 3033 E. Platte Ave., Friel said.
Doubleday and Lewis did not resist when they were arrested, he said.
Arrest documents in the case are sealed, so details of how police tracked the suspects and why they came to Colorado Springs are unknown. Friel said the blizzard played a role in their capture. The storm was a barrier to their fleeing further, he said.
Doubleday is facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. Lewis is facing a charge of accessory to first-degree murder. Both are being held at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center. Doubleday is being held without bail, while Lewis is being held on $50,000 bail.
The shooting happened about 3 a.m. on a Sunday nearly two weeks ago. A witness called 911 and reported a female clerk was severely injured on the floor of the store, Aurora police said.
Police issued surveillance photos from the store and a description of a single male suspect. The convenience-store chain offered a $10,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the conviction of the killer.
Police got an arrest warrant on Dec. 14 naming Doubleday and Lewis as suspects. Its unknown what role Lewis allegedly played. Lewis child, a 1-year-old boy, was with the two when they were arrested. Friel said he didnt know whether Doubleday is the boys father. The boy is in the custody of the El Paso County Department of Human Services.
Doubleday and Lewis had been living in the Denver area since late last year. They moved to Colorado after being evcauted because of Hurricane Katrina, Friel said. That storm struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005.

It's President Bush's fault.
President Bush hates Colorado people! LOL
Yeah, NO almost as bad as Baghdad
I've never seen a positive story written about Katrina evacuees.
Just an observation
Katrina scattered these low-lifes from the Big Easy to everywhere else in the country. Didn't know how lucky we were back when they were all concentrated in one place.
It takes a blizzard to....

Indeed.
It's almost as if the hurricane just loosened up a cancer so that it spread.
Actually it's up here in the Denver area where I am--Aurora. Kind of weird though--I'm not sure if they have a motive or not.
I've never had blue collards, only the regular green collard greens. Are they good? How do you cook them?
besides, most of new orleans criminals came back already.
Not enough of them, apparently.

New Orleans was not in the top 5 in murders? We know that theirs crime in other places too, that obvious, but not to the degree that crime was accepted for many years in New Orleans.
