6-party talks end, entering recess

(Kyodo) _ (EDS: ADDING INFO)

The six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear ambitions ended Friday after five days of negotiations in Beijing and entered a recess, the chief Chinese delegate said in a chairman's statement.

Reading out the statement, Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei said, "The parties have reaffirmed their common goal and will in striving for the peaceful goal of denuclearization the Korean Peninsula."

"We will carry out the commitments specified in the September 2005 statement and will take coordinated steps to achieve those goals," Wu said.

China's state-run Xinhua News Agency said the six-parties --China, Japan, North and South Korea, Russia and the United States -- agreed to implement it "in a staged manner."

The statement adopted by the six parties at their fourth round of talks in September 2005 commits North Korea to abandon all its existing nuclear arms and programs in exchange for security assurances and economic benefits.

N. Korea completely lived up to prevailing expectation, despite some U.S. overtures.

It appears that N. Korea even ignores China. They must feel that they can push around China just like they do with S. Korea, and to a less degree U.S..

This resurgent belligerence may be understandable but it could hasten their demise even though they do not realize it. The best situation for us is for N. Korea to overplay its hand, feeling that they are no longer restrained. The prelude for the surpise end of this long-running saga?

We will only alter our nuclear policy if you allow us to continue counterfeiting your currency.

Merry Christmas to all.

If anybody does anything about Chiahead, I hope it is the Chinese. North Korea's Northern border is a lot less well-defended than its Southern border.

Of course, His Midgetness may decide to use the 20,000, 30,000, whatever, artillery barrels he has presighted on Seoul to flatten the city just out of spite anyway.

I think it's time for another strongly worded letter from the UN.

China wants this sort of outcome. The talks are simply PR, to make China look like a "team player" to duped Westerners, so we will keep spending our money there and allowing our industry to go there. In reality, both China and Russia are on the side of the DPRK, nothing has changed since 1953.

Why do these posers always sound like Mad Magazine cartoon parodies of themselves?
