President Clinton's national security adviser removed classified documents from the National Archives, hid them under a construction trailer and later tried to find the trash collector to retrieve them, the agency's internal watchdog said Wednesday.
The report was issued more than a year after Sandy Berger pleaded guilty and received a criminal sentence for removing the documents.
Berger took the documents in the fall of 2003 while working to prepare himself and Clinton administration witnesses for testimony to the Sept. 11 commission. Berger was authorized as the Clinton administration's representative to make sure the commission got the correct classified materials.
Berger's lawyer, Lanny Breuer, said in a statement that the contents of all the documents exist today and were made available to the commission.
But Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., outgoing chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, said he's not convinced that the Archives can account for all the documents taken by Berger. Davis said working papers of National Security Council staff members are not inventoried by the Archives.
"There is absolutely no way to determine if Berger swiped any of these original documents. Consequently, there is no way to ever know if the 9/11 Commission received all required materials," Davis said.

I used to know a guy in college by the name of Brian Williams. He was a pot smoker and a burnout. He eventually flunked out. You're not talking about him, are you?
"Where is the outrage"?????
What subject matter did the documents concern?
Oh man!!! You gotta know that when a high ranking administration official is hiding classified documents in his pants, hides them under a construction trailer, then throws some of them into a garbage can...
...when these documents could be damaging to the previous administration...
...you just gotta know that we will be hearing and seeing wall to wall Sandy Burglar stories for days to come - followed by the Congressional investigation, followed by the Special Prosecutor, with network newscasts asking "What did the President (who directed Burglar in this search)know and when did he know it.
This will damage the Democrat Party trememdously, perhaps affecting control of both houses of the legislature...
Oh, what the Hell am I thinking??!!! This guy is a Democrat. Ain't nothin gonna happen!
W had the power, and he didn't use it.
But...but...but...but the media said only the GOP is corrupt!
Republican congress people are REALLY starting to take on the personality of the French military....
"What they mean is that it successfully keeps the people in their place while freeing the elites to do whatever they want."
That is so very, very true.
Appalling.
Don't think so.
No, he wasn't on that committee.
But he was a contributor. He was interviewed and consulted.
The following paragraph is cut and pasted here for your information. It is from Newsbusters.
Kudos to "Fox and Friends" as they were the only morning news program on Thursday to extensively cover the Sandy Berger story. Mr. Berger, former National Security Adviser to President Clinton, pled guilty in federal court on Wednesday for stealing classified documents from the National Archives, hiding them in a construction site, and then destroying them. Mr. Bergers actions occurred shortly before he was to testify before the 9/11 Commission. CNNs "American Morning" and ABCs "Good Morning America" both offered brief news reads on the subject. CNNs coverage totaled 24 seconds while ABCs totaled 23 seconds. CBSs "Early Show" and NBCs "Today" both ignored the story completely.
That's good to know. Was there some other crook from Clinton's admin who was in the ISG?
That must be why I saw his name in connection with it. I remember reading something about "him" and "it" on FR but I read so much and my brain doesn't retain as I would like.
Thank you and bookmark for later
W had the power, and he didn't use it.
Damn straight.
Anyone want to argue with me again when say Bush is an outstanding Republican, and no Conservative?? Pretend I'm Scooter Libby making that statement.
Go ahead and convince me.
