There is a republican majority in New York??? in the state senate, which is by region not by population as is the US Senate. NY is a RED STATE, in that regard...most counties are RED. its the population centers of NY, Albany, Buffalo, Binghampton, Syracuse and Rochester, and now, alas, my own Suffolk county (which was till recently RED also)that are a bright liberal BLUE.

In the last election, I believe the Democratic candidate for governor lost only four counties in the entire state, so it is certainly not just the cities that vote Democrat. Every single statewide office-holder is a Democrat, and the Democrats picked up seats in Congress, the State Senate, and the State Assembly. New York is a very blue state now.

I'm pretty sure that the NYS Senate is apportioned by population these days. The districts have just been gerrymandered so that Republicans win them.
