They presumbably have proof the money came from an illegal transaction. Just because the money is drug-tainted does not make it illegal per se. Most currency in circulation has been found to have some cocaine residue on it.

I also wonder why every time I hand a bill over $5 to the clerk, they run the counterfeit check pen over the bill. Something going on that I missed?

I'm so paranoid now, I make the bank lady "pen check" the bills in front of me before I'll accept them......
