Mississippi Governor and former RNC chair, Haley Barbour is my pick right now.
He was RNC chairman when the republican taking both house and senate in 1994.
He points out the huge difference between a state helping itself during and after the hurricane and the worthless people of SE Louisiana and their democrat governor.
I know he said he did not want to run but I think we should draft him.

The MSM (namely, the Washington Post) is still trying to nominate candidates for the REPUBLICANS to run.

Let one more name be tossed into the hopper. General John Abizaid, who has announced his retirement from active duty and is leaving his post as commander of the US forces in Iraq. Abizaid was born in the United States to a Christian Lebanese-American family, is fluent in Arabic, and is the most senior military officer of direct Arab descent. The name Abizaid means father of Zaid in Arabic. He was raised mostly by his widowed father. He studied Arabic in Jordan, where he received special forces training. He started a program to put Arabic speakers on a fast track for promotions. A graduate of West Point, he is vastly more qualified in military affairs than that great white knight raised by the Democrats during the previous Presidential election cycle, Wesley Clark. And apparently, military competence is a widely desired trait in our civilian leadership. Or it should be.

The last former military officer with combat experience who served as President was George H.W. Bush, a naval aviator with some rather spectacular history of his service in WW II. When commissioned as a officer, he was one of the youngest (if not the youngest) aviators in the history of the US Navy. Somewhere, there is film footage of the young Lt. Bush being rescued after his aircraft went down at sea. He did lose an air crew, so it is not as if Bush the elder did not have a couple very close brushes himself.

Professional politicians, who have specialized in the art of the deal, may be no match for the warrior who has faced personal risk and overcome what are sometimes huge odds against themselves and their mission.

"I ran for President in 2008" - so I deserve higher speaking fees in 2009.

Perhaps, but he may also figure that a credible run could give him a chance at the VP slot.

If not at the VP slot, certainly a job somewhere in a "shadow cabinet" that would almost have to be in place before any new President assumes office. In this case, presumedly a Republican President.

Still unnamed.

I'd have a hard time voting for him, but would if he got the nomination.

But I won't work on his behalf.

I'd still like to see George 'Macacca' Allen run. He is a good man.

"Gilmore won solely because of his "car tax" cut pledge."

And he lied about getting rid of it. We still have it and higher property taxes to boot.

"I'm supporting DUNCAN HUNTER. "

I think its going to shake out quickly, with Hunter the only intelligent conservative running. The rest are all poseurs.

It was a perfect plan to be implemented one year after his term expired.

Please, if you can, give me the name of a PLAUSIBLE running mate for Duncan Hunter.

George Allen is a good man; however, between 'macacca' and especially losing the Senate, there's no way.

Plenty of people have lost an election to go on and win a better office later. If you think there is no way because of Macacca that's just dumb. The only reason GA lost Virginia is because of Northern Virginia. He is thirty times better then lying Gilmore.

I agree that Allen is far better than Gilmore. I like Allen; he was one of the few unabashed conservative voices in the Senate.

Having said that, while Virginia is trending bluer, it's still not exactly a blue state.

The main reason I think it would be hard for him to come back is his last campaign against Webb. He lost because it was an uncharacteristically pathetic campaign; he was always on the defensive. Yes, northern VA did hurt him, as it always does the Republican. But down in the Richmond area, for example, GA only won Henrico County by 1%.

Anyhow, he really went out with a wimper, not a bang. That is more difficult to overcome.

He lost by what, a few thousand votes? It's not like we kicked him out in a landslide for Webb.

Less than that I think. He lost in what should have been a stomping win. Had he not run a dismal campaign, he would have won.
