Of course war isn't stress free.
This stress is speaking of the forces being stretched and burdened in a military sense...having enough of everybody and everything to get all the jobs done. The troops themselves in Iraq seem eager to do their jobs, and many have volunteered to go back 3 and 4 times (not personally stressed).
As to war not being stress free in a military sense as this is meant, I think your comment surely applies there. I imagine it was real stressing on the forces in World War II.

I understand that .. and we are in th middle of a war
Anytime we go to war there will be stress on the military numbers because we have to use more troops
Though many of us know this .. many of the general public doesn't think this way because they have no idea what's it really like to live in hard times
IMO, they don't have a full understanding of what we are dealing with and how military actions work .. and many in the media are doing a piss poor job explaining the realities to the general public
