Short summary of a Spiegel article:
After a private organisation of expelled persons who had to leave former eastern Germany in 1945 started a lawsuit against Poland for compensation, the Polish foreign minister, Mrs. Anna Fotyga said that Poland want to negotiate the treaty concerning the boarder. She obviously is backed by the Polish Prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Mr. Kaczynski said, that in Germany there is absolute stubbornness about to take on the liability of such lawsuits against Poland.

Beside of that the re-negotiation of the German-Polish boarder-treaty is complete cretinism, since this is the treaty in which Germany accepted the Oder-Neisse-boarder. It would be the dream of those idiots from "Preussische Treuhand" that this treaty is not valid anymore. The border treaty is in the fundamental interest of Poland and the Polish people, because Germany gave up large parts of its former territory to Poland in it.
Besides of this Poland has absolutely no means to press Germany into a certain direction. Nobody in Germany is very impressed of this awkward polit-show that is going on since the new Polish gouvernment is in power. The goodwill of German politicians with the rulers of Poland, the stressful Kaczynski familiy, is anyway very claimed. Instead of accepting that in a democracy it can happen that sometimes tpolitical incorrect lawsuits (that have no chance on success) happen, the current Polish gouvernment is permanently overreacting. The reason for this firework of emotions can probably be found in the incompetence of the Kaczynski familiy to solve the most critical contemporary problems of Poland like a unemployment rate of roundabout 18% and a disappointing growth rate of 3.4 % (the lowest in the former eastern bloc - the Czechs have 6.1% i.e.). Finding a "foreign enemy" is a proven gamesmanship since a few thousand years for lousy politicians.
Beside of the "positive" internal effect for the ruling Kaczynski familiy the political damage for Poland is immense. Poland appears as a nation that is lead by some very strange people in western Europe. Instead of bringing in positive conservatism into Europe, Poland is wasting its time with the "Preussische Treuhand". Political lunatics from the east meet the political lunatics from the west. This is pathetic.
WESTERN EUROPE PING!
Here we go again.....We ain't helping out on this one....Not unless they start bombing London...even then....
The Polish twins are having political trouble. They are using this to stir up the base.
These guys are the type that gives Poland a bad name.
Germany owes Poland and others in the same way that Americans owe the Indians and black slaves.
The only difference (as you already mentioned) is that Germany already paid once.
The Kaczynski brothers are bombing London? That would be something new!
Correct me if I am wrong, but in an historical context, I believe it is Poland that is occupying traditional German territory (Prussia); not the other way around. Poland used to be further east, but Stalin pushed the country west at the expense of Germany.
To a certain extent you are quite correct.
Since "history" in this region melds quite nicely with pre-history and dozens if not hundreds of invasions and waves of peoples crossing this territory, it is quite a tough call and naturally a bit of a touchy issue.
The Polish twins are playing a dangerous game and being callous and stupid. But that is something we have already established.
On the other side of the border are German groups who want compensation for the land they lost in at the end of WWII.
In my opinion, there should be countless and tireless exchanges and the writing of common history books and the development of as much understanding as is possible between two different peoples. Ideally Europe will eventually look like a big Switzerland except with more transparent banking laws.
We should help Poland invade Germany
Yup! That is also my dream. With one difference: I would keep the Swiss banking laws.
;)
Uh well. Before you start to invade us Germans you should bring your last invasion in Iraq together with your Polish buddies to a positive end (Sarcasm but not political criticism. Iraq was nessecary in difference to some other invasions). This would be much more reasonable.
Besides: Invasions are out since 1939.
Germany can have East Prussia back anytime ;-)
Yawn. Repetita non placent. If you Poles think that the EU is a "stalinistic" organisation you simply have to leave it (Besides - was it possible to leave the Soviet Union?? - That much to "EU-Stalinism").
Some forms of political inconsequence hurt.
"Switzerland with more transparent banking laws"- that's about what it would amount to.
The reality is that borders are drawn by winners, not whiners. Just ask the people who live in Alsace and Lorraine. Past diplomatic attempts to sort out what land belongs to whom (Treaty of Verailles, Congress of Vienna) have only resulted in more anger and eventual war.
