Baby forgotten in shopping cart at Midland store

Do you have children? Thi is not mean to be any kind of jdgement, I'm just wondering.

I have 4 daughters, and i understand how this could happen. Thankfully, it never did!

So much easier to have the baby close to you at all times. Especially in stores and especially at this time of year. I did the whole leave the baby in the bucket car seat for the first few months. Banged my shins, strained my back, and struggled to get the car seat to fit in shopping carts, etc. Boy was that silly. Now I just throw her up on my back or against my chest and I'll never worry about leaving her somewhere.

I'd guess both parents have Alzheimers. I'm surprised they did not forget that they have a baby.

My sisters Mother In-law left her baby boy in a stroller outside (this was in the 40's) a store and when she finished shopping she forgot him. When she arrived home her husband asked where the baby was?
The shrink he sent her to determined she wasn't insane.

My Mom accedently left me at the grocery store when I was two. I think she expected me to get in the car on my own, and I didn't. She didn't realize I wasn't there until a few miles away, my brother asked, "Where's 'The_Victor?'" Even the best parents can have a moment of absentmindedness. We are human.

I just keep having images of that opening from the Simpsons where the grocery store clerk picks up baby Maggie out of Marge's shopping cart, runs her through the bar code scanner, and puts her in a shopping bag.

I agree. My wife and I managed to lose one of the boys in a sporting goods store when we thought the other was watching him. They did the Code Adam lock-down thing, and we found him playing with putters on the little green they have set up to let you try them out. We try to implement 'positive exchage of control', just like you do when flying an airplane: 'You have the child', 'I have the child' and then 'You have the child', but it's hard to pull off! :)

Here's a little story on how this can happen:

On a cool day (~50 degrees) a number of years ago my wife and I went to church with our three small children and my addled father-in-law. I dropped my wife off at the front door with her Dad and I parked the car with the kids in the back of the van. The kids were 4, 3, and one and a half years old at the time. As soon as I parked the car my two kids popped out and I was concerned that they'd get hit in the parking lot so I jumped out of our minivan. All this time my one and a half year old was sitting silently in the seat directly behind me. My mind was concerned about the two older kids and I half thought my wife had our little one so I proceeded into church completely unaware that I had left her.

The ONLY time I thought something was wrong was when I went to her Sunday school class to pick her up and I asked where she was. That's when they told me she was never dropped off. My heart sunk like a stone in realization and I sprinted out to our car. There was my precious baby girl who had obviously cried herself to sleep. Although she has no recollection of this event, to this very day I have nightmares about this incident and will go to my grave remembering that look on her face when I opened the sliding door.

My kids are still fairly young and we ALWAYS do a head count and verbally confirm with one or the other, "You have so and so, and I have so and so." I am deeply thankful to God that this was not a tragedy that I would have to live with for rest of my life.

I can remember when our children were little and we would take them shopping. Every time we went down a new isle 1,2,3,4 yep they are all here, every door we went through 1,2,3,4 check. In or out of the car 1,2,3,4 all here. I must have counted to four a million times, never lost a child.

Well I have one too about my mom. When she was a baby she walked away from her parents at a beach (this was in the late 1920's) and she was found walking along a highway (of course there was hardly any traffic in those days) having fun happily playing. Needless to say my grandparents were frantic by that time and had the whole police dept out looking for her.

I totally understand this happening, it happened to me. 2 months after my son was born I was at a local CVS I set down his carrier in an aisle and started looking at cards, next thing I know I am in the check out line without my son! I hurried back to aisle 4 and retrieved him. Being a new father I cut myself a break.
