I agree a review of SAR is in order, it just shouldn't be done in the press.

Really?

What would you know about this except for the press and except for surfer?

I can just see the deputy who refused a phone call because of a ball game and Sarah R. changing the way SAR operates, all on their own.

The deputy should have been fired in a move to prevent him from getting any retirement benefits. What a louse.

Actually the Undersheriff had just lost a bitter election. Bottom line he was not happy about the election. He lost to a rival and the election was pretty dirty from what I understand.

He was demoralized and now all of sudden the county needed him but the county didn't vote for him.

I can understand how he felt but man this was no time to playing the crap.

We don't need to learn fromt he review, the rescuers are the ones who need to learn. That is why an after-action review (AAR) is ALWAYS to be held without recriminations. (Note I didn't say consequences). When an AAR is held simply to mete out punishment, the players are all too cautious the next time, spending more time doing CYA than mission. Yeah, the paper might have extracted their pound of flesh but it is the NEXT set of victims who will pay the price.

Just two weeks later a car goes off the road on a major highway. Someone actually calls in the accident, nearly, but not quite, pinpointing the location of the auto.

A quick looksee, nope don't see a thing! And two people are dead. A family had to hire a private helicopter to find the car which was in plain view.

It's not just Oregon. It seems that those responsible for searching are totally unqualified.

Bureaucracies are populated with cronies, incompetent, and diversity hires that have NOTHING to do with competence.
