Obama for President? Illinois Republicans Are (may be) to Blame
FrontPageMagazine ^ | Dec. 16, 2006 | Robert Klein Engler

If Senator Barack Obama becomes President of the U. S., then the nation has the Illinois Republican Party to blame for it.

Many voters who do not live in Illinois understand little about how Barack Obama became a U. S. Senator in the first place. Nor do they know of his record as a state senator or of his liberal voting record in the U. S. Senate over the last two years. Many just know Senator Obama, to quote John Podhoretz, as "an uncommonly opaque rock-star politician."

Besides being a creation of the media, Senator Obama is also the creation of failed Illinois Republican politics. The lesson Illinois Republicans seem to have a hard time learning is that sometimes in politics half a loaf is better than none.

So, Keyes was on the ballot, and then Keyes lost to Obama. The election wasn't even close. Illinois Republicans gave Obama this victory as a gift, to the chagrin of many. What were they thinking?

Some Illinois Republicans act as if they really don't want to win elections. They prefer the no loaf of ideological purity to the half loaf of winning with a less than perfect candidate. They prefer to keep the party to themselves, instead of expanding the party with candidates who can win elections. If Barack Obama ever becomes president, or even vice president, the nation and conservatives can blame it from the beginning on the Illinois Republican Party.

This applies to more than just Illinois.

Just remember that if Hillary becomes president, you can blame it on the conservatives who voted for Ross Perot, because George HW Bush "wasn't conservative enough" -- so Bill Clinton got 8 years in the White House, which also launched Hillary's political career.

If only people would learn that actions have LONG ranging consequences.

Politicians should learn that same lesson.

Ditka was the only real hope to beat Osama, but Ditka wimped out. Not sure what the Illinois GOP could have done.

This article is crap. Illinois Repubs. are hopelessly outnumbered by Dems, so it does not matter what they do. The Dem nominee automatically is the Senator.

The problem with the IL GOP is that it's run by crooked RINOs and flaky conservatives.

IL is such a blue state because conservatives are unwilling to work with other unless their egos get stroked. Too many conservatives bear petty grudges against each other. IL Freepers often compare those people to Somali Warlords.

Strange, the article never mentions what the MSM/liberals did to torpedo Jack Ryan's candidacy for gov (which resulted in the Illinois Pubbies scrambling for a candidate):

(From Wikipedia)

"Ryan married actress Jeri Ryan in 1991; together they have a son, Alex Ryan. They divorced in 1999 in California, and the records of the divorce were sealed at their mutual request. Five years later, when Ryan's Senate campaign began, the Chicago Tribune newspaper and WLS-TV, the local ABC affiliate, sought to have the records released. Both Ryan and his wife agreed to make their divorce records public; but not the custody records, claiming that they could be harmful to their son if released."

"On June 22, 2004, the California judge in the case agreed to release the custody files. The decision generated much controversy because it went against both parents' direct request and because it generally reversed the earlier decision to seal the papers in the best interest of the child."

But if it turns out that the Illinois Republicans gave Obama a free pass, doesn't that make it much more likely that he will fall hard?

He may well get the nomination, but then the scrutiny will begin, and the whole thing will unravel.

The most recent example would the Illinois Govenor's race.. When Topinka won the nomination, a lot of people was going to vote for the Constitution Party and doesn't care that Blago was going to win again.. Well he won and now we get another 4 years of him ramming of socialist programs down our throats...

Obama was going to win regardless of whether Jack Ryan stuck it out.

This argument would be very convincing to me if it were not made, for the most part, by those that prefer the moderate to liberal Republicans ideology.

The whole business only happened in the first place because the Republican jerks in that state got rid of an incumbent and perfectly re-electable senator in the first place because he refused to give them the pork they demanded.

I misremember his name, but that was the root of the whole fiasco.

Instead of having the cup 2/3 full these
Republicans would rather have the cup empty. Makes no sense.
We now have a democrat congress. Little chance of securing a
conservative supreme court justice for sure.
I guess punishing those RINOs paid off, eh?

Aside from democrats outnumbering Republicans, front runner GOP candidates were tainted and Alan Keyes was his eventual opponent.

He sailed to victory.

Speaking of dense people. Today I found a democrat getting all excited that the GOP was going to lose another seat because Bob Barr is becoming a libertarian. LOL
