If you don't believe in the koran as the literal spoken word of allah, then you don't believe the central tenet of the faith.

I'm trying not to be critical, but Islam is a works based religion. Muslims believing that the Koran is the literal spoken word of Allah is not one of the pillars of their faith. There five pillars of the faith are all works based, thus their faith becomes very legalistic when applied in it's primitive form

The Testimony of Faith
Ritual Prayer
Obligatory (religious) almsgiving
Fasting
The Pilgrimage to Mecca

The Word of God being inerrant is a Christian based concept.

Muslims believe in abrogation

The Koran is the Word of God, which means NO TRANSLATIONS ARE POSSIBLE. It is the very anchor of that faith. Thus the enormous variety of cultural adaptations, so that the Islam of the Bedouin is radically different from that of the Shiite farmer.
