This line got to me:
"You know," he said, "sometimes I wish they would do this for us when we come home alive."
And he's right. We need to honor the men and women who serve our country when they come home alive too.
A couple of years ago my son met a young man in the Air Force in full uniform for the first time at church - someone's som was home for a visit and went to services in full dress uniform. My son was 4 at the time. The young man explained to him that he was in the Air Force, that he flew jet fighters, and that he had just gotten back from Iraq.
My son looked at him and yelled at me "Mom, superheroes are TOO real - there's one right here."
I think it made the guys day.
I totally agree and plan to make a huge fuss next month when my baby brother comes home from Balad. He is my hero. When I read stories like this one I can't help but think how I would feel if the article was about my brother. They all deserve more thanks than we can express.
Your son is a wise, wise child!!
