I should also note that I find it interesting that conservatives here are bashing the strongest anti-communist portion of our population. These Cubans who escape Castro aren't communists, they are individualists (almost by definition). The political pressure to keep the embargo on Cuba for almost 50 years (and deservedly so) has come primarily from Cuban-Americans in Florida. If they are willing to keep their focus on a communist threat for almost 50 years, shouldn't you give them a little respect as conservatives?

All right! I was so disgusted when we sent them back on their earlier attempt.

Isn't it fascinating? Risk being shot, being eaten by sharks, drowning, or dying as a result of dehydration/starvation to escape a prison island, and get treated as if you strolled across the border to pick avocados and get paid under the table.

I guess we ought to send all those Vietnamese who came here in the Seventies back home, then? Silly me, I thought there was a difference between illegal immigrants and refugees.

And if Republicans allowed in one billion anti-Communist Chinese and gave them all citizenship, I'm sure the GOP would win every election for the next sixty years. Don't talk to me about the political situation -- please explain to me instead the difference between China and Cuba.

What about Chinese escaping Hu and his Communist butchers, who make life-threatening (a great many have died) voyages across the Pacific in search of freedom. Only when they get to America, they're almost never given asylum -- unlike the Cubans who get it automatically.

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore......

Oh, please, the Statue of Liberty was erected in 1886, when world population was little more than one billion and U.S. population was 60 million.

If Emma popped into the current USA what do you suppose she'd think of this mess?

Like I said, how many billions are there that would like to come to this golden shore? 1 billion, 2 billion, or more?

Our population is already projected to grow up to 400 to 500 million mostly from immigration. We have one of the most generous immigration policies in the world.

At some point we're going to hit a tipping point, where immigration will be a negative instead of a positive (we may have already reached that point).

We can't save everyone. And our FIRST loyalty is to our fellow citizens and THEIR welfare, not the citizens of other countries.

I said almost never given asylum. Which is correct. The overwhelming majority of Chinese citizens who arrive in the US and are apprehended are sent back to China.

Why are refugees from Communist Cuba allowed to settle in the US, but refugees from Communist China, Communist Vietnam, and Communist Laos are almost always sent back?

I'd like to see the numbers, and how they compare to those of the Cubans.

This would give Florida to the Democrats and could very likely put Hillary in the White House.

I've got a question for you under your scenario. The Cubans have Florida, according to you. The Mexicans have California, Texas, Arizona and how many more states. The Muslims have Michigan. They ALL have to be "appeased" to get their vote.

The question. At what point does the "appeasement" stop? When every state is "owned" by some foreign enclave of immigrants? Not many left. And the few that are left, no politician gives a damn about.

Hooray! More illegals!

They are probably LEGAL immigrants because under United States law, Cubans have the right to live here if they touch U.S. soil. You can disagree with the law (I don't), but that is the law. The LEGAL Cubans are probably the best thing that has happened to Florida since Florida became a State.

There ya go!

You forgot the Cuban sandwiches though, like a sub but much better. They have a tough chewy crust and a special sauce like no other. They are the only thing I miss about Florida.

I'd like to see the numbers, and how they compare to those of the Cubans.

1. 100% of all Cubans who make it to United States soil are granted political asylum. That's what the law says.

2. In 2005, Chinese nationals filed 7540 asylum requests of which only 1442 were granted, according to the United States Department of Justice. However even those numbers are highly misleading. Large numbers of Chinese illegal immigrants don't bother to file for asylum because they know the odds of receiving it are slim. So that 7540 really only reflects the strongest subset of cases, largely from people who can prove that they are political opponents of the Communist regime.

It's abundantly clear that if you're suffering under one Communist dictatorship, you get free access to the United States. But if you're suffering under other Communist dictatorships, the US won't have anything to do with you.
