If, and is a big 'if' this proves out, it will be fasgt tracked. There are no drugs we do not know the affects of involved, so the toxicity question is moot. As the father of a child with type 1 diabetes, I and millions of other americans will not stand for big pharma, the stem cell lobby, or any other special interest group slowing down this avenue which could lead to a cure.
The CBC story you linked suggests that the treatment would only prevent susceptible people from getting type I, and maybe cure people who have only had it for a little while (i.e., islet cells are damaged but not destroyed yet). No use for people like me: ten years since diagnosis, islet cells long dead. Still, I wouldn't have to worry as much about my boys getting it.
I'm neither diabetic, nor do I have any family members or friends so afflicted, but I want to see this work, and get out to those suffering as soon as possible.
You'll hear Michael J. Fox telling us how dangerous capsaicin is ~ a regular old "risky scheme" with "risky substances".
