Glad to see they're solved that vexing little problem of non-pulsatile circulation. Earlier recipients died of pulmonary and cerebral edema.

the device, which is about the size of a flashlight battery, could last up to 10 years. OK, but will he? An interesting concept....

Personally, I don't see how this can work. The capillaries are usually about 1 blood cell wide and I thought you needed a small pressure spike to push the blood cells through.
Further, I suspect that quite a few membranes in the body require the pressure spike to function correctly.
I would be dumbfounded if this works.

Earlier recipients died of pulmonary and cerebral edema. This guy probably will too. The force you need to use to get the blood to circulate without a pressure surge is probably great enough to force the fluid out of the blood vessels and into the intercelluar cavities.
They might try giving him trental to make the blood cells more maleable but I don't think even that will work long term.

Was their deaths due to their otherwise damaged vessel walls or just too great a pressure?

I would think a lot of membranes in vital organs use the tidal pressure to function.
When the systolic comes in, so does new fluid and when the tide goes out (diastolic) the old fluid gets pushed out.

The article says he is well enough to be released from the hospital in a few days.

Mainly vascular damage although I'm not certain.
