Hanukkah

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights or Festival of Rededication, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that starts on the 25th day of Kislev, which may be in December, late November, or, while very rare in occasion, early January (as was the case for the Hannukkah of 2005–2006). The festival is observed in Jewish homes by the kindling of lights on each of the festival's eight nights, one on the first night, two on the second night and so on.

In Hebrew script, the word Hanukkah is written חנכה or חנוכה. It is most commonly transliterated to English as Hanukkah or Chanukah. It is also known as the Festival of Lights, Feast of Dedication, and Feast of the Maccabees, Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem by Judas Maccabee in 165 BC after the Temple had been profaned by Antiochus IV Epiphanes, king of Syria and overlord of Palestine.

Happy Chanukah! re: Recipes, a favorite. Although more commonly a Purim dessert, great for Chanukah too: PoppySeed Roll

Thank you so much for starting this thread, Dolly, and Happy Hanukkah to all our Jewish freepers and friends.

I've been wearing a Jewish Star of David necklace with a Christian cross inside the Star for several months now and have received many compliments on it from Jews and Christians alike. I think our Jewish and Israeli friends have more support than they realize, but somehow we only heard from the malcontents.

Candle Cupcakes

Making your own menorah is one of the great pleasures of celebrating Hanukkah. Menorahs come in all different shapes, made from nearly any materials, as long as each candle is kept separate and distinct from the others and they are in one line with the shammas raised. These candle cakes can be arranged together in nearly any shape -- a circle, square,
straight line, or whatever you can imagine -- to form a different and deliciously edible menorah.

INGREDIENTS

14 cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies
3 tbsp unsalted butter
1 pint chocolate ice cream, or frozen yogurt
fresh raspberries, for garnish

PREPARATION:

1. Equipment You Will Need:
food processor
saucepan
muffin tins
paper cupcake liners
large spoon
Hanukkah candles

2. Adult:

To make the crust, whirl 12 of the cookies in a food processor until ground very fine. Melt the butter in a small saucepan or microwave and mix well with the cookies.

3. Child:

Put one paper cupcake liner in each muffin mold. Using your fingers, press some of the cookie-butter mixture along the bottom and up the sides of each mold. Try to get the cookie mixture pressed together as smoothly and evenly as you can.
Remove the ice cream or frozen yogurt from the freezer and let it soften slightly for a few minutes, then spoon it into the cookie molds, pressing down until smooth.

Fill the molds with the ice cream or frozen yogurt.

4. Adult:

Place the filled tins in the freezer until they hold together well, about 3 hours or until you're ready to use them.

5. Child:

Insert a Hanukkah candle into the center of each cupcake. Refreeze until very solid in the tins, and wrap well. (You can even do this a week ahead.) When ready to make your menorah, remove the tins from he freezer, then carefully remove each cupcake, with its liner, from the tins.

Arrange the menorah as you wish -- in a row or a circle, but make sure to elevate the shammas by placing it on the remaining two sandwich cookies. Then immediately light the candles and say the blessings. Of course, this doesn't take the place of the real menorah. Be sure to blow out the candles before the ice cream gets soft!

yes, you are right on that one Peach. I feel esp now there has been so many attacks on so many fronts against them. It is terribly sad.

I recall you sharing on ATRW about the necklace. I have a star of David & cross necklace that I wear also.. It is one of my beaded creations & I added the pewter pendants.

Where am I going for good latkas?

Okay, now you have my mouth watering! I have a few Jewish Deli/resturants that serve good ones but NONE match those of my Slovak mom! She hand grates all & has the right combo of spices ,egg etc to make them great. I have a super busy day today but will ask her for HER recipe & try to make them tomorrow sometime & if it turns out right will post here. She was one of those pinch here, never measure cooks. She is mentally sharp but a total invalid & so has not cooked in about 4 years.

Potato Pancakes (Latkas)

I can't imagine Hanukkah without fried potato pancakes (latkas in Yiddish and livivot in Hebrew). We eat latkas on Hanukkah to remind us of the oil which miraculously burned for eight days when the Maccabees purified and rededicated the holy Temple in Jerusalem. But latkas are so tastey that they can be eaten the other 357 days of the year too.

INGREDIENTS:

PREPARATION:

1. Grate potatoes and onion. Transfer to colander and squeeze mixture to press out as much liquid as possible.
2. In a large bowl, mix egg, salt, pepper, flour and baking powder. Add potato and onions, and mix well.
3.
Heat oil in a deep, heavy skillet.
4. Drop about 2 tablespoons of potato mixture into the pan for each pancake. Flatten with back of spoon so each pancake is about 2 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter.
5. Fry over medium heat for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crisp. Turn carefully with 2 spatulas so oil does not splatter. 6. Drain on paper towels.
7. Before frying each new batch, stir potato mixture. If all the oil is absorbed, add a little more to the pan.
8. Serve hot with applesauce, or sour cream, or sugar.

They tell the ACLU it's a beacon light to help Ted Kennedy find his way to the Capitol after happy hour, and so far they've left it alone. :0)

Happy Hanukkah to my FReeper friends! We get together as a family, light the Menorah, have a big dinner with traditional Jewish food, and exchange gifts, especially focusing on the little one. We always invite a few of our dearest Christian friends on the first night, to share our traditions. Our house will be full of relatives and friends and lots of fun all weekend!

A special Hanukkah greeting to you. Nobody here does more to educate people about the Jewish experience, nobody dedicates as much time to posting illuminating articles and fostering debate about issues regarding Israel. You are a tremendous asset to this forum, and I for one very much appreciate your efforts.
