Both my husband and I were born in California (we are 41 and 43) and lived there until last year. Our 3 children were born in CA (20, 15 and 6).
However, I was ready to be a stay at home mom and there was no way - even with 2 salaries - that we could buy a house.
So, we packed up the family and moved to Nevada. We are in a small town just outside Carson City and we have not once regretted the move.
Friends said that we really needed to think because once we left we wouldn't be able to come back. No problem with that - we have no plan EVER to return to Kalifornia.

This kind of thing tempts me but I'm afraid that I'd go from a very good income as a professional, able to save for retirement, etc., to a job where I barely get by. It's a pretty scary thought for someone mid-career (roughly your age). Of course no amount of money is worth it if where you live makes you miserable.
