Sounds like ICE doesn't trust the sheriff's department not to spill the beans on the date. Probably sensible.
100 years ago, the story was about foreign-born immigrants working 12-hour days at the meat packing plants. The wages were so low that Sinclair called it "wage slavery". But the Lithuanians didn't speak very good English, so what choice did they have? The principle character in "The Jungle" sees his American dream of a decent life dissolve into nightmare as his job hauling steer carcasses in the stockyards leaves him bone-weary and unable to support his family.
Not exactly a description of a good, high-paying job occupied by Americans.
$25,000 year with full benefits.
I have a significant part of my population that's fearful illegal and won't call us then that's not good for our community.
There, fixed it.
I want EVERY illegal immigrant deported... I'd like to see the most Violent (and hateful) go first, that's all..
I'll have to disagree. I was born into a family that owned the largest meat packing plants in So. California. Through the 70's-80's it was my working life. I learned to work hard and made a lot of money. We fed Southern California and the military with high quality beef. Yeah, I hauled carcasses, and I could lift a half a beef from one rail to the other. I worked everywhere from the kill floor to shipping. We were eventually forced to close as the mid-west could produce beef in a box and ship it over here for less than we could. Still, those were the best days of my life. And Americans did lose their jobs when we shut down.
It's kind of funny to me that Swift in Greeley has been advertising for employees on the radio rather heavily the last two weeks. First time I have ever heard an ad for jobs at Swift. Now this.
Ping
There was a nice fluff piece last week and they said that in the 1970 they made $22 per hour and now they make $11.00 and the Anglos don't cut it any more. I wonder why?
One of the Greeley, CO protestors was complaining to the local TV that "it isn't fair" that they weren't warned of the raid ahead of time because "they always told us before!" I wonder where those warnings came from?????
Hmmm - what a coincidence! < /sarc > And Swift just got a whole lot of free labor from a bunch of illegals who now probably won't be seeing any paychecks from them. Here's hoping that the fines slapped on the company will far outweigh any profits they made off of the illegals.
That's an angle I hadn't thought of. It did occur to me that Swift knew ahead of time, thus the ads, and it fits your suspicion as well. Frankly I would much rather have seen the owner and managers hauled off in handcuffs than the illegals.
No kidding. What would $22 in 1970 dollars be today? Maybe $50?
Illegals - bringing down the average wage that Americans won't.

According to this article, the whole industry is headed to Mexico. I think I'll have to become a vegetarian if that happens.
Thanks for the article...it took me back 30 years and made my memory cells shake hands.
