RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A North Carolina-based Marine was ordered Tuesday to stop an online auction in which he promised to legally change his name to whatever the highest bidder wanted it to be.

Sgt. Cody Baker, 29, could have become "Mr. Clean" or even "Finest Freshest Fastest," but he was told the auction violated military rules against commercial endorsements, said Camp Lejeune spokesman Lt. Col. Curtis Hill.

Probably a good thing - what if Democratic Underground won the auction?

I'm reminded of the Army reservist who changed his name to "Optimus Prime" because that particular toy brought him so much joy as a child.

Dang...was hoping to bid for "Jar Head" (cause I'm a former Sailor who loves to remind those who have worn the ugly olive drab that the best marine is a submarine!)

Quick, name a famous Marine (who had something named for him..."Sands of Iwo Jima's" Sgt. Stryker doesn't count 'cause I don't believe they named the new USMC vehicle for him)

Surrender Baker would be his new name.

The Stryker was actually named for TWO soldiers who distinguished themselves in battle.

The Navy's LHAs and LPAs are named after famous Marine battles. to name a couple, the U.S.S. Iwo Jima (LHD-7) and the U.S.S. Belleau Wood (LHA-3).

The Navy's DXXs and FXXs are named after famous Marine officers and Enlisted men. Probably the most famous name is the U.S.S. Basilone (DD-824), commissioned in 1949.

For the record, the Stryker is an Army vehicle, not Marine. Marines use the LAV-25 and the AAV-7. Now, stop at the next beachhead, and keep the meter running...we won't be long :-)
