How come if you are 50% black and 50% white you can call yourself African-American? I mean, aren't you just 50/50?

My brother (white) married a girl who was 1/2 white and 1/2 Hispanic. So their three kids are 75% white and 25% Hispanic. His two daughters claimed that they were "Hispanic" when they went to college (to get preferences). But their son refused. He told his liberal dad (who was furious), "I'm just an American."

Not exactly what you call yourself, but what others see you as. My great-grandmother was half white, half black but the people in the south considered her black.
