Britain should cancel a deal with the United States to purchase Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) jets if America does not share sensitive technology by the end of the year, a report by the parliamentary defense committee will say, the Financial Times reported on Dec.8.

The yearly report on British weapons spending, which is due to be released Dec. 8, says “it is still uncertain whether the U.S. is prepared to provide the required information”, despite Prime Minister Tony Blair and President George W. Bush agreeing in May that Britain would get the technology it needed.

Well... If anyone is going to get a technology bump from us it might as well be the United Kingdom. They've certainly earned it in blood and treasure over the last few years.

Maybe too many Lefty Brit politicians who would like to share the "sensitive technology" with the wrong people. Not that we don't have the same problem here.

French and Germans abandoned us when the going got tough, the UK stuck with us. I'm not going to forget that kind of fidelity.

We are the reason they don't speak Russian and had to forget German. damn!

Friends don't keep score, but they remember their debts. They remembered their debt and stuck with us, we remember ours by following through with this deal.

Fair enough. We'll call your bluff. Now start depending on the French to defend you if things get bad.

I don't believe the crap about all this 'sensitive'
stuff. Not sure who makes the JSF, but,

they don't want others to know
how simple the programming is.

"According to the Financial Times, the issues lie in the aircraft’s advanced missions systems and its stealth capability.

I am against sharing stealth technologies with any U.S. allies.

The British are our most important ally. This would enhance our effectiveness when working together.

This is the exact truth.
The current UK plan is to build two new carriers, proper ones, to replace the baby Invincible carriers we have now. The plan was to use the JSF as the main strike plane from them. We ARE buying Eurofighter (largely because we have put so much into it and are building part of them) but Eurofighter is not designed for carrier operations.

If we cannot acquire JSF from our loyal allies, then we will have to buy RAFALE-M (French) because it would take too long and cost too much to design our own. If we buy Rafale, we will have to redesign the carriers because the size, landing characteristics etc of Rafale are different from JSF. This will delay the project, and increase its cost, (and enable the French to build a carrier themselves cheaply off the back of our order).

As for the gung-ho attitudes expressed by the Yanks on this post, have you not figured out that you are creating a self-fulfilling prophecy? You complain that your "allies" don't back you (in spite of Britains heroic efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan) and you will be able to do so again in ten years time when the next war pops up, because Britain wont have the capacity to help, due to the fact that its existing carrier fleet will have been scrapped and the replacements wont be in service cos we wont have any planes to fly off them. Good plan. Well done.

Alliances work both ways, or they dont work at all. Perhaps it isnt so strange you have so many enemies in the world - I mean look how you treat your friends.

OK. We have no choice but to buy French then. Kiss goodbye to that billion dollar contract for your defence industry, hand out the redundancy notes to the defence workers, and shoulder more of the burden for the next war. We won't be able to help you as much. We'll be flying Froggie crap rather than good planes.

Its no bluff. If we dont get JSF, we will have to buy French planes or do without carriers.

Might as well start depending on the French. It seems we cant depend on YOU.

Look, if we want their friendship we'll need to compromise and
pull our pants down to our ankles before we bend over.

It's the Liberal way. Were the superpower, we deserve nothing!
