Suffice it to say, this clown probably will not be reproducing due to his radiation exposure. Brilliant.
Radiation posioning? A very misleading description of RF burns designed to panic the idiot into the nearest ER...
i think you have to die to get darwin. i could be wrong but i think it was a prerequesite.
Just watched Mythbusters - they hung a turkey in front of a radar antenna for an hour - the temperature dropped. Unless the TV station is using microwave energy at significant wattage it is unlikely that the pranksters would get "radiation poisoning" - the TV station I am sure does NOT use x-rays to broadcast.
Maybe microwave burns, but certainly NOT radiation poisoning.
"The suspect would likely have been exposed to microwaves emitted from the tower, which could cause radiation poisoning, Schwartz said."
I smell a bazzillion dollar lawsuit coming....
If he stayed inside the mast (likely the perp wasn't truly stupid) he would have received little or no exposure to anything at all.
Moral to the story.. collectively, the press is a moron.
"Maybe microwave burns, but certainly NOT radiation poisoning."
I agree with post #2, they're trying to scare somebody into exposing themselves.
Well it is radiation. You average guy doesn't realize that light is radiation.
"Radiation poisoning" from ionizing radiation of something radioactive is not the same as RF burns from a microwave or other radio frequency source.
>>>Mark Higgins of Higgins Tower Services Inc. said radiation exposure would occur at the top of the tower, where the transmitters are, and that the transmitters are turned off when his crew works on them<<<
That has to be a misquote, or the tower guy is an idiot. Transmitters are NOT at the top of the tower - the antennae are. Transmitters are in buildings at the base of the tower. And if one is properly equipped, work can be done on towers without "turning off" transmitters.
Hell, all they gotta do is look for the Milwaukee guy who's sporting a suntan in December...
ping
Thanks...
I guess I need to brush up on my nuclear physics.
You are probably correct. The police are trying to entice him to come out for help so they can arrest and/or fine him.
Reminds me a bit of the fugitive stings the US Marshals did in the '90s when they enticed federal fugitives into a convention center in D.C. with the lure of Super Bowl tickets. As the greedy fugitives showed up for what they expected to be a dog and pony show, the feds popped out and arrested them all.
Yes, I think the police are trying to lure this prankster out with fear.
Very misleading indeed. I was watching "Mythbusters" last night, and they were trying to cook a turkey with "radiation" - so they went out to a TV tower and the guy told them there was only about 2-4 rads - and a microwave had 500-700.
So .. I don't think the prankster has anything to be worried about. Of course, the police could be just trying to scare him so he won't do it again. LOL!
He's from MILWAUKEE ergo he's a lib,no big loss !!!
People who pull this sort of prank usually can't keep their mouths shut, looking for some sort of notoriety. His friends will see reddened, peeling skin, then freak out and turn him in, "for his own good," lol. That is, if he hasn't already gone running to the ER himself. Classic setup.
The police who thought you could get radiation exposure this way is the one who should get the "Darwin Award".
