CA: Droves say goodbye to Golden State
Mercury News ^ | 12/10/06 | Mike Swift

Wayne Brown gave up $40,000 in income to move from the Bay Area to Kansas. And he feels great.

It got to be too much last year for the college information-technology officer: the commute to downtown San Francisco that sometimes took two hours, the housing-price spiral and the high-wire borrowing that paid for it.

``I would find myself sitting in traffic,'' Brown recalled, ``screaming at people.''

When the Kansas job came up in early 2005, Brown and his wife, Teresa, sold two Bay Area homes and happily settled in a suburb of Kansas City. They have never looked back.

The Browns are an example of what demographers say appears to be an unprecedented phenomenon -- even in a good economy, more people are leaving California for other states than are arriving from the rest of the country.

Between 2004 and 2005, the migration flow into California from the other 49 states started flowing the other way. Data from the state Department of Finance shows that, for the first time this decade, more people left California in 2005 for another state than the number who moved in. Mary Heim, a finance department demographer, says this particular kind of outflow will continue for the foreseeable future.

Unlike the tens of thousands who left Silicon Valley following the tech bust earlier this decade, the new migration is about the quest for something besides a job: a better quality of life at a lower cost of living.

--snip--

... California's population of 37 million people is still growing, because of a surplus of births over deaths and because of foreign immigration.

I visited AZ sometime ago for a couple of job interviews.. I really enjoyed my visit.. The heat does not bother me.

It is going to get worse in Illinois now the Rat gov has won reelection and he is going to ramrod every socialist program down our throats in Illinois he can think of.

I know there are some problems in AZ, but it is nothing compared to what we have in Illinois....

Guess all of those folks are moving out before we get a MEXICAN GOVERNOR really putting the finishing touches on what was once a great place to live. I pray I can one day move back to the South!

"$40,000.00 a year income isn't alot in SF"

Many people live quite cheaply in SF, on the sidewalks.

"unfortunately, they are moving and polluting conservative states with liberalism."

liberalism will never fall into disrepute until it is enforced by those pseudo-intellectual, nuance-speaking, eyeglass-wearing pretenders to god-status because of their self-aggrandized status as geniuses....only until the so-called american electorate has experienced their tyranny, will liberalism be considered an aberation that has to do with mental dysfunction.

until then, they will bring the ooze and slime with them and you'll have to clean your shoes with every step you take.

We moved from CA ten years ago to Phoenix - two years after we moved, my parents moved from CA to live 2 miles north of us and now in the last 6 months my sister and her 3 grown sons all moved here from CA. Jobs were much easier to find and housing and living costs were not even comparable. My sister still can't believe she's only paying $100 in electric bill now after $300+ average in So. Calif! We're republicans and hope more reps come here than demos but it was awful to watch our Gay gov get reelected over a solid man (Len Munsil) and J.D. Hayworth get ousted for a democrat! Arizona is moving left and we have to raise a new generation to take it back to the right! In 2008 my 2 children will both be over 18 and able to vote Republican for the first time!

Left CA after 45 years for New Mexico. But that was 8 yrs ago and now they are here. This is a liberal (near welfare) state---so this makes matters much worse. Albuquerque just passed a pet protection law--even down the the size of the perchs permitted in bird cages.

It is beautiful here, but is slowly being destroyed by the wack-ball liberals.

Don't Californicate Oregon...sorry too late! Bezerkly North now.

LOL! The U of O has long been one of the most radical campuses in the country, home of anarcho-Marxists, Monkey-Wrenchers and tree-sitters. Don't even get me started on Portland! ("Keep Portland Weird" is a popular bumper sticker).

Just for purposes of historical accuracy, California was a great state until it was flooded with New Left radicals mainly from New York and other Eastern points back in the 50s and 60s. And where did all those damned Haight-Ashbury Flower Children come from? Certainly not California!

The first thing this lady from New York said to me upon arriving was "I can't understand why you people need all these guns." I said if you don't like them go back to New York.

I believe the correct reading is that he is paid 40k less in KS than in CA. That is his salary in CA was x plus 40 k where x is unknown.

LOL

I grew up in So AZ. I left years ago because to many Califlowers and "back easters" had moved in.

Now when I visit, I have trouble telling the difference between SoCal and Tucson - even the paint schemes on the homes are the same. And now they all complain about taxes....

I met a new fellow here at work and he mentioned he had just up from Califlower - I told him to never mention that to anyone else.

You would get more respect locally if you told folks you had just moved in from Thailand after running a (fill in the blank house of ill repute) - after all, you had been working.

But then, that's just what I hear.

Whites still constitute a solid majority of the population

That makes all the difference.

I suspect that most of the population growth is from immigration, legal or otherwise.

If we ever build the fence here in Arizona, it needs to make a turn to the north at the California state line and go all the way up to Nevada. Arizona is rapidly moving from a red state to one of those freaky lavender jobs

LOL.....Boy, is that the truth
