CA: Droves say goodbye to Golden State

Wayne Brown gave up $40,000 in income to move from the Bay Area to Kansas. And he feels great.

It got to be too much last year for the college information-technology officer: the commute to downtown San Francisco that sometimes took two hours, the housing-price spiral and the high-wire borrowing that paid for it.

``I would find myself sitting in traffic,'' Brown recalled, ``screaming at people.''

When the Kansas job came up in early 2005, Brown and his wife, Teresa, sold two Bay Area homes and happily settled in a suburb of Kansas City. They have never looked back.

The Browns are an example of what demographers say appears to be an unprecedented phenomenon -- even in a good economy, more people are leaving California for other states than are arriving from the rest of the country.

Between 2004 and 2005, the migration flow into California from the other 49 states started flowing the other way. Data from the state Department of Finance shows that, for the first time this decade, more people left California in 2005 for another state than the number who moved in. Mary Heim, a finance department demographer, says this particular kind of outflow will continue for the foreseeable future.

Unlike the tens of thousands who left Silicon Valley following the tech bust earlier this decade, the new migration is about the quest for something besides a job: a better quality of life at a lower cost of living.

--snip--

... California's population of 37 million people is still growing, because of a surplus of births over deaths and because of foreign immigration.

I agree with you there.. thank God we in Arizona have put at least some brakes on the massive immigration into the state, even with a dem governor, we're doing it with propositions.

Yah, California sucks so bad we should all just flee and leave 55 electoral votes behind and not even TRY, despite voter turn out in the mid-term elections. Let's just chuck CA into the sea. Jesus, I can't believe some people here.

It's not the end of the world. It's a decision: do we take CA back or shy/move away and write it off?

Hey Texasforever, how old is your daughter?

I've got a 19 yr old female coming over right now, and if she's your daughter.. well.. hahah ..can I call you Dad if we end up getting hitched and it turns out she is?

I am still head over heels in love with the California I grew up in. I just can't find it any more.

Leaving was the best decision I ever made.

Our goal is to retire on the Big Island. The "paid for" move to Oahu was hopefully a strageic step. Good luck, I think you will do well................

That's why I talk to you and other FReepers mostly until I can say to L.A., Kiss my butt.

I "progressively" (GAG) moved westward to Ventura county, but the liberals did also, just a step behind. Westlake Village became a liberal bastion, followed closely by Agoura Hills.

So what was the impetus for them moving there???

Busing. As soon as "Irving" and "Glenda" were to be schooled with the great unwashed, the exodus began. And yeah, call me an antisemitic, but I was there, and I saw what was controlling politics in the city I was born in. It was not evangelicals.

when a Californian is behind us, they will try and run you down unless you step on the gas to get out of their way.

You do see a tiny bit of that here in Hawaii, but it is rare. Used to fark with those types for great fun, called it "ego agjustment therapy". Kinda miss that fun, messing wiht inflated egos because of whatever overpriced car they leased. Have to grow up sometime, heh heh............No chance!

All irrelevant. I grew up in Santa Monica and Playa del Rey. Don't tell me what I do not know from 50+ years of observation! If you are a native of at least 30 years, you know damn well what has happened. Otherwise, I suspect you are a transplant. I could give a $hit less about all those eastern cities. I do care about the city I was born in and what has happened to it!

So, all that said, do you find the Pronenade a pastoral slice of American life?/sarc

The beach? Too crowded, too many illegals drinking beer and harrassing people, strollers everywhere, dirty baby diapers on the sidewalk, in the sand

LOL! I think the last time my wife and I went to a local (not the usual LA beaches, but well north) we were inundated with "latinos" with multiple coolers with continous food conduits, "thumpa thumpa thumpa thumpa" music overriding it all, bare-assed kids running amock, etc. 3rd world. They have taken it all over.

As a new kai'amiana. (If I spelled it right this late at night) I know what you have seen. Have vacationed on the BI for over 10 years, now on Oahu to live finally in Hawaii. I do not see the haole attitude too much here, but so many more cars, hard to say. Definitely saw it in Kona, pissed me off, big time.

Shaka...........

The 4 of us are too old to move back to some snowy/icy non global warming state.

My wife is from Illinois and her brothers still live there. They were calling her around Thanksgiving and bragging about how warm it was back there.

The recent snow and ice storms smacked them very hard. One brother was without power for 4 days. His small semi farm is reached by his private 1/3 mile long road and his light tractor couldn't budge the snow and ice. No electrical power meant his heating system didn't work and neither did their all electric kitchen. He put in a wood burning stove in their combo kitchen, living/family/dining room a few years ago. Without that stove, they would have been in real trouble.

Other relatives in that area got caught at work and had to spend a couple of unplanned nights at work. Others couldn't get to work.

One of our sons, who moans about the cost of living in California was back in up state NY, NH and Conn last week, freezing his California butt off. His mother, my trophy wife, asked him when he would be selling his California home to move back where he was. He actually swore at his dear Mother.

Another son, this summer, returned from Oregon after 16 years of rotten rainy weather with frozen rain during a large part of the winter.

Most of us probably have conservative friends and family members to spend most of our free time with, and we avoid most contact with the Hate America/Christians form of rat. We still have several friends who fall into the category of the old democrat. We can kid these people and likewise, and have good times with them.

The illegal alien problem is in every state in the lower 48. Every state has too many of the new rats and many are controlled by them. Arnold ain't perfect, but he isn't Gray Davis and vetoed about 200 bad bills last year.

We can avoid going to and into LA and Gay Frisco. Hell, I don't go to Marin county and parts of Sonoma County to avoid the radical lefties. We don't watch the local tv news and stopped taking the Frisco Gay Rhonical in 1992.

"IOW unassimilable rich white liberals, but most of those rich white liberals, haven't thought that far ahead yet. They're too hysterical about George W Bush."

You just described most of the elite lunatic libs we know in N California.

A week ago, we were at a Christmas Party hosted by a couple in our inner circle. They live in a very exclusive gated community with 36 homes in about 50 acres. They are very conservative, and he is the CEO of his own company. They moved into a gated community due to his travel.

They invited every couple in the enclave. Everyone is 50 or older, no children and very rich. Most of their neighbors are heirs of old line companies.

I could not believe how these elite a$$hole neighbors were complaining about America and their hatred of President Bush. There was one very obnoxious group of 10 guys hanging around the bar. I got permission from my host to have some fun with them.

So he, a couple of our close male friends and one fiery republican female waded into this group of whining elite libs. After a few challenges by me and my friends, we found out none of the guys had ever served in the military. None of them owned a business or worked in the business world. All of them refused to tell me what their degrees were in or if they had one and what their grade point was re their comments about how stupid GW was. They were sons and grandsons of Americans who had made a fortune in America, and they spent their years and inheritances hating America.

The finishing touch was a beautiful redhaired woman from an Eastern European country, who lived in the enclave. She escaped with her parents while under the yoke of Communism. She blasted them as worthless elites living better than the rest of the world with nothing better to do than running down a President, who was trying to keep our country from being destroyed by their buddies, the Islamofascists.

The liberal girly guys just looked at her and rounded up their liberal old hippie wives and left. She laughed and told our friend, the host, that the departing whiners would probably never come back to any social function at his home. He said that would be no problem.

Not all of us are ruining these states. In fact, when it comes to Oregon, it could be argued that the Californians who arrived in the 90s made it marginally more conservative.

Note that as Californians fled, California became more leftist.

I do miss certain things about California...the weather, mostly. But it has a hostile business climate, and the lunatics in the legislature are out of control. There is also an anti-family mentality in many parts of the state.

Excellent reality summary:

Conservatives from California settled in your area, the Bend Area, Medford Area and Brookings area and other conservative areas.

Gays, lesbos and enviral whackoos took over Ashland and most of the all ready liberal college town/cities in Oregon.

The worthless ones drifted into Portland to go on welfare and become little pinkos with a green outer tinge.
