He may have not been Hitler, but he was far from a freedom-loving pro-democracy president.

Unfortunately, for Chile, the choice wasn't between Reagan and Pinochet, it was between Allende (Castro) and Pinochet.

Would Chile have been better off under Castro? 17 years without democracy or 33 years and counting?

Of course not. But it would have better under a Pinochet that was friendlier to democracy, and who didn't subscribe to the sort of brutal tactics he employed.
