That would do nothing to get rid of Communist penetration of the government. They are like malignant cancer. Their hiding places need to be found and then they need to be mercilessly cut out. Your solution is tantamount to watching from a distance while the patient gets eaten away by cancer and dies.

No; it's more like using chemo to kill the cancers rather than digging them out with a rusty fork.

It figures...you would rather watch Chile's bone marrow be destroyed, the linings of the internal organs be destroyed, the mitochondria of the muscles be destroyed, the hair fall out... in short, you would rather watch the patient waste away than cut out the cancer. If you were in charge back then, Chile and most of Latin America would be a giant Communist prison camp.

How is mass imprisoning subversives and establishing a civilian government of pro-republican forces (such as the Christian Democratic Parties), and having the military act as protector of the gov't, rather than the gov't itself, not anti-communist? If you were in charge back then, you would have been acting to destabilize the OAS's capacity to prevent Marxist-Leninist infection by fighting against the creation of a united front against communism.

"Just out of curiosity what is your definition of "real freedom and democracy?"

Gee, how about the right to vote for the government of your choice?

It's pretty funny to hear FReepers arguing for the rights of dictators to suppress their people.

"Could it be Allende style socialism?"

Nice try but not even close. I disagree with you, so you suggest that I'm a socialist - I grew out of that trick when I left the schoolyard.

To most thinking Chileans, he was a hero. He saved them from the chaos of Communism. The country was going downhill fast under the under the far left regime of Allende. It was beginning to look like Cuba in every respect. I know, I was there before and after the so-called revolution. The left still insists Pinochet was wrong, especially our US/RAT leftists.

Documentation please! Chile did prepare many new weapons systems that we bought and use (cluster bombs, for example).

Figures....first year I didn't take him in my Dead Pool and December is double points.

Pinochet was an SOB but that's what may have been needed to defeat the Communists in Chile. he did great harm, and greater good. There's no doubt he was involved in serious crimes, but no doubt that Allende was worse.

So your basic arguement is that Pinochet was a SOB but he was OUR SOB?

And so do the millions of Chileans who didn't have to suffer under a Communist regime thanks to Pinochet.

There a big difference between an ally and a friend. The classic example of this is Stalin and Churchill. Pinochet, while no Stalin, definitely was no Churchill.

Then have a little sympathy for someone else's mother.

And stop going on like Pinochet's regime only had 2,300 victims. That's just the estimated dead. Add thousands of tortured (but not murdered) Chileans and those that fled before they were swept up and thrown out of helicopters. Displaced and dispossed because they thought that democracy was a good idea, regardless of who won elections.

Pinochet's legacy: economic collapse in the 80s, followed by nationalisation of mineral resources & land reform. Democracy restored only if the military (Commander in Chief: A. Pinochet), received royalties from mineral rights.

Maybe you should study the history of Chile before you open your ignorant mouth about a great foe of communism.
