NEW YORK - Allstate Corp., the largest publicly traded U.S. home and auto insurer, said Thursday it will stop writing new homeowner policies in New Jersey on Feb. 5, citing concern a hurricane might strike the state.
The state's second-largest home insurer after State Farm said the change will not affect 230,000 homeowners who already have policies with the company.
Allstate will no longer write new policies for owners of homes, condominiums, mobile homes and landlords. It said it will also not renew policies for about 300 commercial customers in eight coastal counties.

Incredible. You will really go to any length to justify your hatred for your fellow Americans, and hang on to your willfull ignorance. I will not seperate you from its warmth.
Oh, c'mon. There are many that are retired, own their car and their home. They pay cash for everything. Many live exactly like that.
Isn't it though.
Nancy Pelosi advocates hatred for entire groups of Americans, and calls herself a patriot too.
Such willfull ignorance, and blind hatred makes me want to puke.
Well, the oil companies have conspired with the government to not let them drill in 60% of the US. There is also a secret agreement to stop building refineries. That way all the companies have to do is buy oil from the arabs and resell it here. No work, lots of money because it keeps prices high.
In exchange for not allowing them to drill, the oil companies have agreed to let the government tax the heck out of these criminal profits. That way, oil people make more money with less effort, the government gets more tax monies from consumers (the real payers of corporate taxes).
Great thing about this for the feds is that they can claim they aren't raising our taxes.
Based on such twisted truths, morals and ethics as reflected in your statement "the state of California does require auto insurance..taxes are voluntary..I do not need money in the bank to write a check"; clearly it is the former.
As better as it may make you feel about yourself, most Americans do not twist & fabricate the truth to suit their bigotries of the moment...especially those in the insurance industry. Happy hatred.
There are several methods to deal with risk. Transferring, avoiding, and accepting risk are three of those methods.
Insurors allow others to transfer their risks onto the insurance company.
You are confusing these very different methods with each other. Insurance companies ACCEPT risk, which is the opposite of AVOIDANCE.
If you want to know about insurance, read a book. But, for Gods sake, don't make it up and pretend to know something about it.
While my comments applied to an industry, in general, your attack seems to be of a (forbidden) personal nature. Why is that, I wonder.
"Take your google and stick it."
I'd say, "Bend over," but I'm not that rude.
As you have been fully aware of from my comments, I represent the insurance industry. It is your insulting comments that are meant, and recieved as personal in nature.
Your comments brag of owning property you did not pay for, skating on taxes lawfully owed, writing promisory notes that are invalid, and demanding others cover your chosen losses for no appreciation.
On the off-chance that honesty became greater in value for you than hatred for American professionals, you would have to confess that:
-you have never had any interest in learning, or personally been taught, the first thing about insurance.
-absolutely everything you profess to know about insurance was learned third-hand(ie: 60 minutes, Gerealdo Rivera, some pissed-off ignorant that felt cheated)
Should I deserve to be slapped down; here is your chance.
Correct me with your specific knowledge of the insurance industry. Be proud. Be bold. Be specific. Spank me.
Good grief! You do mind reading too.
Your comments brag of owning property you did not pay for, skating on taxes lawfully owed, writing promisory notes that are invalid, and demanding others cover your chosen losses for no appreciation.
Perhaps you would be so kind to provide an actual quote.
On the off-chance that honesty became greater in value for you than hatred for American professionals, you would have to confess that:
Are you suggesting that all American professionals are worthy of respect regardless of profession or personal performance?
-you have never had any interest in learning, or personally been taught, the first thing about insurance.
Do you mean to tell me those sessions with insurance salesmen were not meant to be informative?
-absolutely everything you profess to know about insurance was learned third-hand(ie: 60 minutes, Gerealdo Rivera, some pissed-off ignorant that felt cheated)
There you go with the mind reading again.
Should I deserve to be slapped down; here is your chance.
I have learned that it is futile to attempt to have a discussion with people who feel compelled to respond to disagreement with distortions, name calling, mind reading, and accusations of hatred. It is difficult to believe that a bureaucrat with the communication skills you've demonstrated here has anything to teach me.
I can do exactly that. I can back up everything I say. But; we digress.
You have absolutely zero knowledge of insurance, and; cannot back up anything you say....not a single thing.
Prove me wrong. Embarass me. Earn a sincere apology, and shut me up. Tell me any one of the following:
What insurance license have you had? Literally, what is an insurance underwriter? Illustrate one basic understanding(of your choice) of what insurance is, or how it works.
Surely such bold venom, such person insult, is not wholly born of ignorance('cuz that never happens). Be proud. Profess your knowledge of the subject.
a bureaucrat
I'm an electrician that builds/repairs platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. But, as always, you were really close.
OK do it.
You wrote: Your comments brag of owning property you did not pay for, skating on taxes lawfully owed, writing promisory notes that are invalid, and demanding others cover your chosen losses for no appreciation. Now back it up with a quote.
I'm an electrician that builds/repairs platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.
A working electrician who also represents the insurance industry (post 290); you are truly multifaceted.
Thank you. Thank you very much indeed.
As stated on this thread; after fifteen years as an underwriter, I chose to return to electrical engineering. It doesn't require 'mind-reading', just literacy.
OK do it
Be comforted. I am anxious, and prepared.
But, let us not digress into that just yet. We were speaking of something far more relevant to this article.
Perhaps I am totally mistaken that your insult is born of ignorance. Set me straight.
Profess your personal knowledge of insurance. What it is, how it works, your personal experience with it, etc....
Focus. Profess your knowledge, or confess your ignorance.
(its OK..it'll be easy..we both already know the answer..you can say it)
Its not a digression at all, but speaks to your honesty, and/or ability to comprehend and respond appropriately.
We can chose to present ourselves as anything we wish on an internet forum - a quick google search is all it takes to pass one's self off as an expert. However, if we pervert and twist what has been written to justify personal attacks - that speaks to character and provides a lens through which everything else may be viewed and weighed.
It doesn't require 'mind-reading', just literacy.
Mind-reading enters the picture when you assume I've read your every post on this thread.
What do you know about insurance?
Do your google thing. Take your time. Get back to me.
Its as honorable as those who work in the business.
What do you know about insurance?
Simple question. Easily answered. Why the dance? Why?
You condemned with such authority before. Be proud again.
What do you know about insurance?
