No Mystery Here. You dont need a convoluted device to explain Alexander Litvinenkos demise.
The poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko, renegade Russian spy and fierce critic of Vladimir Putins government, is everywhere being called a mystery. There is dark speculation about unnamed rogue elements either in the Russian secret services or among ultra-nationalists acting independently of the government. There are whispers about the indeterminacy of things in the shadowy netherworld of Russian exile politics, crime and espionage.
Well, you can believe in indeterminacy. Or you can believe the testimony delivered on the only reliable lie detector ever invented the deathbed by the victim himself. Litvinenko directly accused Putin of killing him.
Litvinenko knew more about his circumstances than anyone else. And on their deathbeds, people dont lie. As Machiavelli said on his (some attribute this to Voltaire), after thrice refusing the entreaties of a priest to repent his sins and renounce Satan, At a time like this, Father, one tries not to make new enemies.
In science, there is a principle called Occams razor. When presented with competing theories for explaining a natural phenomenon, one adopts the least elaborate. Nature prefers simplicity. Scientists do not indulge in grassy-knoll theories. You dont need a convoluted device to explain Litvinenkos demise.
Do you think Anna Politkovskaya, the journalist who was investigating the war in Chechnya, was shot dead in her elevator by rogue elements? What about Viktor Yushchenko, the presidential candidate in Ukraine and eventual winner, poisoned with dioxin during the campaign, leaving him alive but disfigured? Ultra-nationalist Russians?
Opponents of Putin have been falling like flies. Some jailed, some exiled, some killed.

Krauthammer would have us believe - on the basis of Lord knows what - that Putin is systematically murdering all who oppose him.
Ho.....kay : I guess ol' "Vlad the Impaler" still has hundreds of thousands of murders to commit; and, let's see:
He needs to shut down The Moscow Times,Novaya Gazeta, and all those Chechen newspapers that hate him.
The evidence in the case increasingly suggests Litvinenko's death was a by-product of the smuggling of nuclear materials out of the Ukraine or other parts of the former USSR. In fact, one rascal being questioned seems to have left a trail of radioactive bread crumbs behind him.
My GUESS is the material being smuggled included Cesium-137:a common nuclear waste by-product.
Beyond that, I couldn't begin to hazard a guess as to what goes on in that snakepit of former KGB/FSB people, thieving Oligarchs,Chechniks, and what have you.
My advice to Krauthammer would be: Wait for the official reports !
Yes, he would. I'm inclined to agree with him.
on the basis of Lord knows what
Right now I'd say extremely persuasive cirmcumstantial evidence.
that Putin is systematically murdering all who oppose him.
All is a bit of hyperbole don't you think? More like 'lots and lots'.
L
Any parallel to a recent US President?
Remember Lucos, or the clamp down on the Russian Press,
Who is building the Nuclear plants in Iran, or currently sending high quality air defence systems to Iran ?
It ain't the tooth fairy !!!!
Now you've done it! You have posted heresy! Expect the Inquisition of the Holy Church of Uncritical Putin Bashing to come down on you like a ton of bricks.
People around Putin die. People around Clintons die. Go figure.
Arkincide.....Russian style. The Dixie Mob is more clever than the KGB.
Genefromjersey has zapped ths matter exactly, I believe.
Smuggling of contraband glow in the dark goodies by a Muslim former KGB Op (ultimately killed by his own smuggling technique) to a place where such stuff could be very well used by Muslim fanatics desirous of building a dirty bomb.
Dirty breadcrumbs indeed. Man what I would not give to be part of the investigating team.
Spot On ! The Russians would never kill anybody.

Putin and the Clintons have a lot in common don't they?
Tell that to Al Gore...
One of the real problems is the involvement of some of the more obnoxious anti-semites in this issue: people like Justin Raimondo, and Wayne Madsen.
They attempt to throw their own poison into the brew - even if they have to make it up on the spot-and it makes anyone who doubts the Moscow Times version of the story look "bad".
On the other side of the fence there are some people who feel they "must" side with the Berezovsky's of this world BECAUSE anti-semitism has been rife in Russia -and many parts of the world- for some time.
This one area of conflict alone makes me delighted I have nothing to do with any official investigation !
Pretty lame statement from Krauthammer.
Alexander Litvinenko was a Muslim, and if lying would further the battle against infidels, I believe he would lie. It's called Taqiyya.
Putin may well have had him killed.
But trying to pin it on Putin based on the deathbed testimony of Alexander Litvinenko , a Russian traitor, and a Muslim, who has aided the Muslin Chechens against Russia is a stretch. - Tom
Interesting Tom
What's easier to believe?
That a former KGB & current powerhungry Russian leader is capable of murdering his opponents by radioactive poison, and possibly even staging the 1999 Moscow apartment bombings in order to gain power?
Or that Muslim extremists set those apartment bombs, and also recently had a dirty-nuke smuggling operation went wrong & a key smuggler died?
That's like asking if the coal or the kettle is blackest. Neither has a good track record.
You got that right. What matters the most right now is finding the source of the Polonium. Russian government appears to not care much, when finding the Polonium source should be critical to Russia. Apparently Putin is all upset that Blair did not censor a dieing man. Stalin Dictatorship or Islamist Revolutionaries. Personally I would vote third party given those two choices ! At least I would preserve my honor and dignity.
