Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is popular within her party but could have trouble winning the presidency, according to a poll that also identified potential hurdles within the GOP for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
The former first lady held a double-digit lead over possible rivals in the survey released Thursday by Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion. Clinton, who has taken steps suggesting a 2008 bid, had the support of 33 percent of Democrats to 14 percent for former Sen. John Edwards.
Former Vice President Al Gore was at 13 percent and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 12 percent. Other Democrats were in single digits.
Still, Clinton remains a polarizing figure, Forty-seven percent of registered voters said they would definitely not consider voting for the New York senator. Twenty-five percent said they definitely would consider voting for her while 28 percent said they would possibly consider it.
Giuliani and Sen. John McCain of Arizona led the GOP field, with 24 percent favoring Giuliani and 23 percent backing McCain. Giuliani and McCain each led Clinton, 49 percent to 43 percent.
But when Republicans were informed that Giuliani is "a pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights Republican," 47 percent said those traditionally liberal positions would be a major factor in determining how they voted while just 22 percent said they would not be a factor.
Conservative voters hold considerable sway in the Republican presidential primaries.
"For Hillary, it is: She is acceptable to Democrats, but is she electable?" said Marist's Lee Miringoff. "For Rudy, he's electable; but is he acceptable" to Republicans deciding the nomination?"
The poll of 967 registered voters was conducted Nov. 27-Dec. 3 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
Indeed!! We must just keep praying and working to keep this woman from ever walking through those dooes again!
Nancee
With the World exploding, with the consequences of Iraq that will dominate everything for the entire length of the next Presidency, and probably longer, it's laughable, if not tragic.
I keep on asking, so far without response, who do people think is more pro-gay rights (whatever that means) Giuliani or Cheney?
It doesn't matter. Cheney is not a candidate for the Presidency. Giuliani is, and therefore under the scrutiny of social conservatives that find him repulsive as a GOP candidate.
Ronald Reagan is spinning in his grave. Giuliani has been a chameleon at best. He seems to change his political convictions as often as he changes suits. He is not Presidential material. Maybe a Senator or Governor, but not a President.
All those losing Repubs Rudy campaigned for are vying to put the last nail in his political coffin.
You could not be more wrong if you tried. It's as if you know less-than-zero about politics or have no knowledge about the GOP. First of all, Ken Mehlman (another Jew who seems to be a target of "certain types" here who seem to have a problem with Jews) and Karl Rove are chiefly responsible for Bush's win over Kerry in 2004. So no Mehlman and it's President Kerry. People staying home at the mid-terms has ZERO to do with Rudy. Did you stay home btw - please tell us. Did you have the courage of your "convictions?"
Note that "The Plan" also includes the manufacturing of an international incident, or a "financial crisis" to showcase their boy Rudy. The agit-prop for this escalates as we type.
Huh?? Paranoia will destroy ya'...:)
It doesn't matter. LOL
To you demented homophobes (first time in my life I ever used the term for this effect) Cheney would not pass your "true blue Conservsative" test.
Hmmmm. I'll remember that when you and your cohorts post what you consider to be damning photos of Rudy. :)
You are reaching with this one. Throwing the term "hompophobes" around will not win you any respect here. What Cheney or his daughter do is their business, not ours. If Cheney were running for President, and if he actually advocated political actions favorable to the homosexual community, that would be scrutinized and would go against his popularity. However, I don't recall Cheney advocating any such agenda as homosexual marriages.
Take their photo of Giulaini and just add a few more people to the photograph, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, even William Shatner (from a recent episode of Boston Legal), many other notables, and they are, shall be say, outed, for the ill humored prigs they are.
A picture of Ronald Reagan shaking hands with Rudy Giuliani means nothing.
Tell you what, I'll worry, or not, if I'm "respected" here. You worry about being branded a liar for repeatedly and blatantly -or by inference- posting what you know is a lie. Giuliani does not support gay marriage, never has.
Look at the bright side, at least they're here.
They could instead be at a soldier's funeral shouting "God hates fags".
More of the MSM trying to tell us that Rudy is our man. Damn, that sucks.

Rudy opposes gay nups ban
By James Gordon Meek, Daily News Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - Rudy Giuliani came out yesterday against President Bush's call for a ban on gay marriage.
.
LOL
You mean he is a Conservative? Doesn't think the Constitution should be messed with for nonsense. That it's a State issue.
The President is for such an Amendment. How is that working out?
Hillary is one bad joke away from being Kerritized and Deanuded. No apology accepted.
