Duncan Hunter, a congressman from California, is perhaps the most intriguing of the second-tier candidates. Hunter is conservative, charismatic, and tough on illegal immigration. He's also a former Army Ranger, who fought in Vietnam, has a son serving in Iraq, and is the current chairman of the Armed Services Committee.
On the other hand, Hunter is not a free trader, ...THANK GOD!
Hunter an Army Ranger, has my vote.
Looks like it will still be McCain getting the nomination, but I could see Sanford or Perry as major contenders in 2012 if McCain doesn't run for a second term due to his age.
Pawlenty is an intriguing choice, given that he could attract some electoral votes that a Perry or Sanford might not. If he doesn't want to run, he might be a good Veep nominee.
He may not be the most conservative voice out there but he seems more palatable than the upper-tier guys.
He will NEVER be president; Americans don't want a dynasty ( not even GOPers and Conservatives! ), he has some personal baggage, and some are still angry at him, stupidly, over the Terry S. thing.
The Bush name is worn out, as is Clinton. Being a Hoosier, I am a Pence fan... but I have to stick to reality.
later
What about Rick Perry?
He is popular, charismatic and comes across pretty well in the media, he should be a decent candidate.

McCain? Esther Esther it's the big one I'm coming to see you honey, i'm coming to see ya!
McCain maybe, he is anti second amendment, pro illegals with no border security, and pro SPP, pro NAU, pro...
Well, do i have to list them all?
No clue. How about him? :)
Not too many senators will even be considered, and a rep? No chance.
Your memory isn't very good. Clinton was praised and mentioned a LOT, on DESIGNING WOMEN, long before he ever ran for president and he gave a terrible speech at the 1988 Dem convention.....after which he was all over various late night T.V. shows playing the affable, "humble" but "intelligent" Governor of Ark.!
If it weren't for Perot, Clinton's WAR ROOM, and a very stupid voting populace, Bill Clinton would never have won in '92.
Don't pine for a Conservative "white knight"; do whatever it takes to defeat Hillary or Obama or whoever the '08 Dem is to be.
I agree that the Bush name will need as rest before Jeb has a chance, but I am very much afraid that the Clinton name still has a mystique about it to the liberals. Unfortunately, the sheeple have VERY short memories and the liberal media wil try very hard to bury all the negatives from Bubba's two terms so as not to tarnish Her Highness.
He never planned for the consequences of closing down the government and when all hell broke loose, he had NOTHING...no retort, no ideas, no plan B.
He is also NOT nearly as conservative as you appear to believe he is. He is a believer in and a pusher of THE THIRD WAVE, a new agey book overlaid with Marxist cant. Read it....you'll throw up.
Unless the RNC is now coaching and prepping Sanford, forget him...he has NO chance at all.
Sorry, but I never watched "Designing Women" and very rarely watched any late-night TV. I just do not remember Bill Clinton being touted as Presidential material until just before he ended up winning the primary. Maybe I just did not do enough "opposition research."
I will not disagree with you at all about Perot, the War Room or the stupidity of the voters, but I would also add the serious weakness of the candidates on our side of the aisle as contributors to Bubba getting two terms.
I also agree with you that we do need to do whatever we can to keep Hillary!, Osama Obama or whatever other slug the Dems run out of the White House. At this time, I think we all need to keep a sharp eye out for someone we can rally around - Our 'white knight" if you will. Not pining, looking and hoping!
Im going to look into him, I got an email from GOPfriends about him, and he is saying the right things.
Who votes in primaries? HARDCORE IDEOLAGUES. And guess what.....that's us and at least 95% of people like is HATE McQueeg. He will NOT win the primary.
Never happen.
So basically what we can include from this article is that we might as well learn to live with the idea of President Hillary Rodham Clinton. Since they tell us we can't be pragmatic and vote for those few candidates who can actually win, then what were left with are a few dregs mostly from the South who will just further ensure the GOP becomes a regional party of the South only that can't win anywhere else. We're told McCain is too apostate, Guiliani too liberal and Romney too Mormon (sad we as a country haven't matured beyond making religion an issue for a candidate.)
If we can't look beyond the fact that there's no perfect conservative candidate out there who has all the perfect positions on the issues and also can win and who at the same time comes with all the apparent pre-determined pre-requisites we as conservatives say we'll accept nothing less than, then we are faced as a party with being in the political wilderness for a long, long time to come. Time to grow up conservatives and realize a half a plate is better than an empty plate--or one full of what we'd all choke on.
"McCain? Esther Esther it's the big one I'm coming to see you honey, i'm coming to see ya!"
Actually, it's Elizabeth. Esther was the sister Fred definitely didn't want to end up with. ;-)
