Help desks are located overseas, not here. Also, not many American college students going into engineering science disaplines. I know this is before your time, but after the Russkies put Sputnik up there was a mad push to emphasise math and science, not so today. The largest college at the university that I attended was the college of engineering followed by business. The athletic teams were identified as the "Engineers." Today the arts school is the largest college and in the Spring will offer a minor in "peace studies." The athletic reams are known as "mountain hawks" but the only bird that circles South Moutain is a turkey buzzard. One final thing, working for Microsoft is a real b*tch as they tend to burn out programmers in less than five years which save them on stock options, retirement i.e., benefits generally five years for "vesting."
Which is why the government should get out of education. But the answer isn't to have Mommy Government use its power to force people to give you things.
Our trade policies with other countries are now based on what the WTO sees as legitimate. Our politicians have turned over their constitutional responsibilities regarding trade policies to the WTO and other trade regulating bodies
that are in no way accountable to the Americam people. China has very restrictive trade policies, why do you think they are allowed to have restrictions on imports, yet we are not allowed to?
So the answer is to wall ourselves off, watch unemployment quintuple and we all become Dust Bowl sustinence farmers?
Let businesses hire the workers they want and stop whining to Momma Government to give you other people's stuff.
"So the answer is to wall ourselves off, watch unemployment quintuple and we all become Dust Bowl sustinence farmers?"
STRAWMAN- The answer is to demand that congress get us out from under the control of UN agencies that tell us what our trade policies should be. We can compete with any foreign country when we are allowed to compete on an equal basis. When the value of the chinese currency is kept artifically low against the dollar and they are allowed to ban American goods, why can't we threaten them with the same?
