Has Mark Levin covered this yet?
The problems with having pure Military represntation, is that the Marine Corps is using it's best and brightest to PROSECUTE these Marines and is using junior officers to defend them, that is why the families of these Marines are expected to go broke, they just cannot afford to fight the Green Machine.
That is why 4 of the Pendleton 8 have taken plea bargains, their families just cannot afford to fight anymore. The Government stacked THEIR side with their best defense, while the defenders of the accused had to rely on pesonal money. They had to remortgage their homes to fight this. They had to set up legal defenses, like this one: http://wwww.pendleton8.net , the one set up to help the Hamandiya Marines.
In the Hamandiya situation, they claimed that the Marines shot the man in the head, yet in the autopsy, there is no head!
The greatest clue as to the weakness of the cases, and the political correctness of the charges, is that NONE of the Marines who took plea bargains in the Hamandiya incident (PENDLETON 8 ), are going to get less than a general under honorable discharge!
To a man, they are going to get general under honorable discharges!
How do you go from MURDER IN THE FIRST TO A GENERAL DISCHARGE??
They never had a case, this all came from the top: make an example of some of our own to make a showcase for the rest of the world.
This is not the Marine Corps I served in.
Tah dah! OK. So smoothsailing is the first to bring someone to mind that just may be able to make other contacts. For all we know there may some lawyer or judges out there someone knows that understands what the hell is going on and would feel duty bound to help one of these Marines get a fair shake, as well as providing a way out of the burden of future debt.
Good points. I have to get ready for work. Do have a great day.
I queried the poster of the thread (Names Ash Housewares) whether s/he has heard any more news about this.
Also, Col. Day is the founder / president of the Vietnam Vets Legacy Foundation. I send an e-mail to the general query address at vets@vvlf.org. But I figured I'd also ask around here whether anyone has heard anything.
Not sure, but I'll forward your inquiry to Col. Day.
Best regards,
Admin
Also, I've been working on a new ping list graphic...
Busy hands are happy hands. Have a good night, everybody!
Pleasant dreams.
You, too, Uncle.
The Corps is providing basic counsel for the Haditha Marines. Civilian lawyers such as Jack Zimmerman, Gary Myers, and Mark Zaid are being hired as additional (and more experienced counsel). Mr Odell did agree with Race's comment that the Corps would be putting their best and brightest on the prosecution side.
At this point, it's every man for himself on the defense. While it might be a good idea for defense lawyers to pool resources (including defense funds), that's not practical at the moment. Among other reasons, no one is sure who will be charged and with what.
Mr Odell thought that $100,000 sounded about right (even at reduced fees) for each defense if it goes all the way to a court martial.
I'll be posting the pdf for the LCpl Tatum defense fund on the Defend Our Marines web page later this week. And, just for clarity's sake, there is no overall defense fund or overall defense strategy at present.
Thanks for the info, Red.
Thanks for the update, which obviously is a bit dismal for those that want these Marines to get at least on par representation.
Update on the defense situation at Post #72
It seems that at least two of the five Marines likely to be charged have no additional counsel at all. I'll try to find out if this is so.
As Uncle says above, most of what I'm finding isn't exactly happy news. But we're best off knowing the facts.
I sent Gary Myers (lawyer for Lance Corporal Sharratt) a very supportive note and told him of the support the Haditha Marines are receiving on Free Republic.
I sent him a link to this thread (since it's about his client) and to the Defend Our Marines webpage.
He wrote back and said...
Thank you for your kind note. I have forwarded it to the Sharratt family.
So that's two families (the Sharratts and the Tatums) who now know about these threads on Free Republic. We'll keep spreading the word.
Not much else to report. Everyone is waiting to see if charges indeed come next week (as was leaked from Pendleton).
Jazusamo and I are standing by to keep you up-to-date on the latest, as it happens.
Thanks for the update.
You're welcome, Uncle. I'm now waiting to hear back from Mark Zaid (lawyer for Staff Sergeant Wuterich). I'll post whatever I hear.
