Having cash when everyone else is broke is a great spot to be in. My Dad's uncle had a modest amount of cash on hand in 1929. He never bought into the stock market because the fast rising market scared him. After it crashed, he bought up a LOT of stock on the cheap. Then he just kept it all. He retired from running his farm in the 60s. He and my great aunt never were short of money for the rest of their lives, and they left a handsome sum to their heirs when they passed on, all from that one brief buying spell in the early 30s.
