John Kline: Why I'll fight any move to restore the draft
Star Tribune ^ | 12/7/06 | John Kline

Three major reasons are behind the move to end the all-volunteer military. All are flawed.

Incoming Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel recently promised to introduce legislation calling for a military draft soon after Democrats regain majority control of the House of Representatives in January. Those who support a return to the draft typically cite at least one of the following three major reasons for doing so. Each reason is based on misinformation or is a cynical effort to undermine our military's effectiveness.

John Kline, a Republican, represents Minnesota's Second Congressional District in the U.S. House.

Mr. Kline is 100% right.

Rangel's proposal is about engendering war opposition, not some dubious "fairness" doctrine.

Not to anyone with a half a brain, but he does do a good job of laying it out in black and white for the Rio Linda types.

Good article.

I wish the party would tap John for some more high-profile leadership roles. I think he would be a hell of a contender for higher office.

Yo, Kline!! There won't be any draft because we will never be at war again. Its clear that the media, Congress and a majority of the American people can't tolerate more than a few months of war no matter the justification.

You have to remember that this was printed in the Star Tribune. The average reader of this fine publication does, indeed, needs such things explained to them.

I fully expect several left-wing screeds in response to this piece via the letters to the editor section.

Should be entertaining.

I don't think they should call it a volunteer military. To me, a volunteer is usually an unpaid, amateur position.

I think we should call it a professional military. Our soldiers are highly trained professionals that choose to be there.

"Its clear that the media, Congress and a majority of the American people can't tolerate more than a few months of war no matter the justification."

I think that it would be more accurate to suggest that BECAUSE of the media and the Congress, the majority of the American people can't tolerate war.

How many male combat soldiers do you think are required to conquer and hold Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Syria?

Do you have a plan to raise an Army and Marine Corps of that size based on volunteers?

At no time in American history have we conquered and "held" anything...with the maybe exception of Hawaii.

Volunteers will always be there because our society currently believes in giving something to their country...albeit it is quickly disappearing.

Absolutely. Once Iran attacks the mainland USA we will have so many volunteers that the services won't be able to take all of them. One of the great things about the USA - when it's time to get the job done real men (not liberals) stand up and do it.

Next question.

Do you think we could have done Japan with volunteers?

If so, why didn't we?

Non- issue. In case you forget that was a long time ago. If our mainland is invaded we will go to war. We will convert major auto makers, etc. to war factories. We will get the job done.

Do you think that our mainland is being invaded by people trying to kill us?
