It seems that the country doesn't have the stomach for this one. Sad to say.
Does unity count in a war effort? It can't hurt.
I think I heard someone say something like this on Laura Ingraham's show yesterday - I think it was a bull colonel in Iraq: "You're playing a tough game and then you look to the bleachers and discover that your fans are leaving. That's going to have a negative effect on morale." Poor paraphrasing, but that, I think, was the gist of the man's comment.

We used to fight wars as a nation but we don't do that any more. These days we send soldiers to fight but do nothing here at home.
During WWII the entire country was heavily involved in the war and that includes people who were opposed. We filled factories with people building the machines and tools of war.

We as a society have no will for war. Past world powers would have shrugged off our casualties in Iraq as a nuisance.
I believe that since we have no will to win a war, the smartest thing we could do would be to sharply reduce our Army and Marines to prevent any temptation to wage another one at any distance from the US. It's ultimately not fair to ask THEM to give their blood and tears when we will just yank the rug out from them as our attention wanders....
