Folks, the al-Qaeda propagandist is here again. With the same message: 'stay away from Islamic countries' ----------
It appears to be impossible to institute freedom and democracy and the rule of law in Muslim countries. Such effort, in stead of bringinging peace and prosperity, bring more troubes for the world. We must understand the underlying reasons first before taking such disastrous measures in the future>>>

How to inact democracy in a muslim country:
1)Get rid of all muslims.
2)Allow non-muslims to immigrate.
3)Democracy.

"If it is "body only", and not the spirit as well ..." "They pretend to pay us, and we pretend to work."
Attempts were made to crush the spirit of the people, it is true. They were not completely successful. In Muslim lands, however ...

sorry buddd, the Iranians are one step ahead
they have ahmadinejad
and like suidide bombers he will gladly unleash hell on israel KNOWING israel will retalliate big time, cuzz in nearly one stroke, as he says one bomb, Israel is gone. On the retaliation? Like the suicide nomber, he and his nation will appear in allahs paradise. Instantly. For him its a win - win situation. He wins on the destruction of Israel, and Wins a trip to the promised land.
someone should glaze them before this gets way out of hand

"So we could conclude that Islam and democracy do not mix like gangbusters, but not that it is "impossible.""
Well, it is the less [seriously] islamic, the more democratic. So where they are present together, they are in inverse proportion.

Well, I've seen that spirit firsthand. What was being crushed were the westernized individuals, like the late Politkovskaya. What you mistake for the crushed spirit is its normal, natural, and utterly uncrushed state: "If I'm the boss then you are a turd, and if you are the boss, then I am a turd". {perfect summation of communist spirit - verbatim translation of a russian proverb].

It is utterly Russian to be insular, and to reject outside influences.
Are you insistent that Communism is more of a mind altering social construct than Islam? It isn't.
Communism has been defeated, and resides in the ashheap of History. Putin is no phoenix.

Iran, Turkey and hopefully Iraq will lead democratic movements through out the middle-east. Radicals have no chances if we succeed in spreading democracy in that corner of the world

It's not impossible, and they will have to find a bridge between their religion and a civilized ME.
Their moderates must find a way, there is no longer a choice, they will not be allowed to roam the globe, murdering innocents with impunity, as they have for the last 3 decades, and even longer really.
Modernity has caught up with them, and now it is being paid for with our blood and treasure. We are a giving nation, and this President has given their moderates a chance to make a go of a civilized nation.
If they do not take it, they are doomed.
For we will defeat them, and hiding under their women's burka's, in houses of worship, in caves, sending their children to suicide, acting like animals will not cut it for much longer.
American's can play dirty, we have before and will again.

In Turkey and Indonesia, the tide is changing. As Muslims become more and more educated and understand what this Islam truly is, things change fast.

Recognize the inalienable rights of individuals not collectives. Constuct a constitution, government, and court system to uphold those rights. Dismantle collectives when they are destructive to those rights.

"Communism"
Islam is worse. Much worse.

It would seem that Turkey is becoming more Islamized, not less.

"ashheap of history" - Thanks for a good laugh. However, such ignorance is outright dangerous. Communism [understood as a way of life, and not as red banners] has never been and will never be defeated - it is our own self-preservation instinct, but directed against other humans in social situations instead of against saber-toothed tigers. Since Stone Age and through mounds of gore mankind [rather, parts of mankind] learned to keep it more or less in bounds, and civilized itself thereby. Still, we have our own clintons who walk through life indistinguishably from commie nomenklaturists, and who thus ARE commies [in the behavioral sense of the word]. Each of us, as it were, has an inner communist, and has to continuously beat it over the head. This fight has no end, and it is to continue - but do each of us have an inner muslim?

"Democracy" doesn't mean "freedom".
Our Founders understood that. Our government does not.

What do you think Islam is if not a "will to power" with religous trappings?
To: GSlob
"... such ignorance is outright dangerous." That's twice you've called me ignorant.
"Each of us, as it were, has an inner communist ..."
Speak for yourself. That may have been how you were raised, but the rest of us are natural competitors. Especially Americans.
"Communism [understood as a way of life, and not as red banners] has never been and will never be defeated ..."
Governor Bradford, of Plymouth Plantation, observed the results of communism firsthand. It justly died on this continent before it got a foothold.
I reject your arguments, and return you now to the original thread topic -- can Democracy work in Islam lands?

Any Englishman of the 18th Century would have said the same thing about India. Yet two centuries under the Britsh Raj did produce a democracy, even though that was not the intention of the British. Eighty years of British rule came close to such a result in Egypt; a lesser time in Nigeria had some sucess. Fourteen years of rule in Iraq did not.
Is it surprising that in four years we have not?
